Common Cloudflare Issues

If you have gone through the instructions and your site still isn't secure or your email isn't working, here are a couple of common reasons:

  1. The DNS is not correct. (Step 6)

In step 6, it has you compare the DNS in your Homestead account and Cloudflare. If this step was missed, feel free to take a screenshot of the DNS page in Cloudflare and post it here. We will check that the DNS is correct.

If email is not working, make sure the email records are correct in the Cloudflare DNS page. They are suppose to match these records:DNS settings for Homestead email.

                            A RECORDS

    Host         yourdomain           Points to

    mx            yourdomain             66.96.142.50
    mx            yourdomain             66.96.142.51
    mx            yourdomain             66.96.142.52
    pop           yourdomain             66.96.135.134
    imap         yourdomain             66.96.135.134
    smtp         yourdomain             66.96.135.134
    mail          yourdomain             66.96.135.134
    webmail    yourdomain            66.96.135.48
    email        yourdomain             66.96.135.48

    MX RECORDS
    Host Type          Points to                     Priority

    @                       mx.yourdomain            10

    TXT Record

    Host Type    Value

    @                 v=spf1 ip4:38.113.1.0/24 ip4:38.113.20.0/24 ip4:65.254.224.0/19 ?all

    Correct anything that doesn't match.

  2. Turn the Clouds on next to the DNS for your domain name and for www. (the clouds should be orange)

  3. The nameservers were not updated properly. (Step 8)

Log into your Homestead account and click the domains tab on the left. Under the domain you are working on, click Edit your nameservers. You will need to click delete next to ns3.mdnsservice.com and then change the other 2 nameservers to the ones provided by Cloudflare. You can't change and delete in the same step, so you will need to click edit twice.

  4. You need to set the SSL to Flexible. (Step 10)

The first part is now completed. Now, please review the Domain Summary and confirm that the SSL shows Flexible. If it does not, click the SSL option, and select Flexible.
(Note: you can also click Crypto at the top, then select Flexible with the drop-down menu on the right. This should save automatically after you select Flexible)

  5. It is set up, but you are just checking www.yourdomain.com, not https://www.yourdomain.com. (Step 11)

Over the next 24 hours, periodically visit https://www.yourdomain.com. When you see your site load with HTTPS, please proceed to the next step.

Try adding the https:// before your domain and see if it shows as secure.

  6. You haven't gone back after 24 hours to finish step 12 and 13

Click on the Crypto button at the top.

In the top section you should now see the status as Active Certificate. On the right side of that section, make sure it shows flexible. You now need to tell all http requests to forward to https. Scroll to the middle of this long page and look for the section entitled "Always use HTTPS" Turn it on. Also scroll to the bottom and find "Automatic HTTPS Rewrites" Turn it on

  7. You have only followed the 6 steps from the email you were sent. There are more instructions if you go to the link from the email:
    https://community.homestead.com/homestead/topics/can-i-secure-my-homestead-website-with-https

**If you have done all of the above, and your site is displaying https:// but isn't "fully secure", common issues include:

  8. Republish your site. This will often times fix that error.

  9. Elements on your site are not secure. Common elements include:
hitcounters (these need to be removed, they generally aren't used on sites these days and aren't secure)
HTML elements- you'll need to open the HTML boxes and edit the code to reflect https.
    Then republish your site

I have went through all of the steps, entered all of my domains in cloudfare. I have waited a few days and my website is still showing not secure. What do I need to do?

My apologies, apparently I was looking at a different account.
https://www.grovecitygaragedoor.com/ is showing secure if I go to it with the https:// which means it is ready for you to go to steps 12 and 13. (Step 5 in this post)
Are there other domains that aren't pointing to that domain that should be secure?

When I tried to enter my site thru kathywildman.com/ just now the URL went to https://www.kathywildman.com/ and the green lock was there. On the navigation bar I clicked  t-shirt and got to https://whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com/tshirts.html which had the green lock I clicked on Bears and went to https://whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com/files/Tshirts/Mammal/Mammals_bears.htm which had the lock. Progress
I can also enter my site with whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com which was the initial name 24 years ago. I also can get in with whatdidyoubringme.com which is what I have on my business card. Both of these entry points come up as not secure. How do I make them secure?

Hello Kathy Wildman

The site names (.homestead.com) will only show as secure if you manually type in the https:// before your site name. The domain whatdidyoubringme.com is not registered with Homestead, and it looks like it is pointing to the site name directly, so I would recommend changing that pointing URL to the https:// version.

In regard to the records you posted, they look fine.

how do I register whatdidyoubringme.com and whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com? These are site names that my customers have used over the last 24 years and may be bookmarked in their favorites or saved on a business card. Once I register them I can make them ssl with cloudfare?

You already have whatdidyoubringme.com registered with another company. You just need to update the URL that domain is pointing to to have https://

whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com is your site name. This isn't like a domain that you can register. This cannot be secured to where it will automatically show https, but if you manually type https:// before that site name, it will be secure. We can't do anything about people that have it bookmarked with http. They will need to update their bookmarks.

Those are fine and your site is actually secure. If you look at step 4 of this post, it means once you can manually type in https://(yourdomain) and it shows as secure, proceed to step 12 and 13 of the Cloudflare instructions. That is where you are at.

Any of the emails relating to email (mx, pop, smtp, imap, mail, email, webmail), turn that cloud off (CDN). The clouds should be grey next to those. After you do that, you'll have to wait for propagation.

There was no mention of that when I added Cloudflare and it was not one of the steps in the original email sent out.  I am very upset as I am in the process of my fall enrollment and there is no way of knowing how many student registrations I have missed.  Peoples livelihoods depend on these things and it should have been brought to attention in the first email.

I apologize for the trouble this is causing you, but it wasn't included in the email or instructions because, if the instructions are followed exactly, there will be no downtime. The instructions do say to compare the DNS in the Cloudflare account to the DNS in your Homestead account and unfortunately that didn't seem to have been done. Due to that, some records were missing for the email which caused your email to stop working until that DNS was corrected yesterday. I'm sorry, but we didn't really have any way to know that your email was not working, so that we could fix it. When you brought it to my attention yesterday, we got it working in a few hours. Again, I am sorry that this is affecting you negatively. I hope the people who emailed you reach out again, and any further emails will definitely come through. As for anyone who "registered", that seems to be a form, so you can see any submissions by logging into homestead.com, go to Websites Manager, click More, Manage Forms. and you'll be able to see any forms that have been submitted.
Photo of Jeni2780

Jeni2780

  • 276 Points 250 badge 2x thumb
That is incorrect; I followed all the instructions when they were given. The part about the mx settings was NOT included or clear in any of the given instructions. Also, the part about my tracker on my home page needing to be deleted was not included in the original instructions.  Making excuses for it now when you have a feed with this many people having trouble (and most of your customers have likely not even made the switch yet) only proves my point.

Thank you for your apology but, making excuses afterwards...negates the apology in my opinion.  Good luck with everyone else, peace out.

Can you check that the Cloud next to the www and * are turned on in the Cloudflare DNS tab? Otherwise, please scroll up and read through the instructions on this article to go over common issues during the Cloudflare set up.

Your site is secure, you just haven't finished the steps 12 and 13 to have it automatically redirect to https. Please scroll up, review these instructions and get that corrected.

If you can call us 800-710-1998 we do not have any hold time right now. One of our web advisors can walk you through what needs to be done.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Email.

I have the same problem with getting my email.  It always worked in the past and, other than the going through the process of making my website secure (https), nothing has changed.  Now it says delivery is delayed.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: my email is going back to senders as undelivered.

Hello Kurt0658

If your email is not working, it is likely because Cloudflare didn't pull the DNS records successfully. Please scroll up and review step one in these instructions. This should help you get your email working.

I added the MX record (be sure to use your full domain name, i.e. include .com).  Works fine now.  Thanks.
Hello Elyzabeth, thank you for all you have done. You've been great. Where do I find step 12 and 13 to finish securing my website?

Sorry Duane! I didnt see your message.
