How to Delete A Website That Is Tied To A Domain

I have a domain associated with a website that I wish to delete.  How do I unassociate the domain from the website so that I can delete the website??

Haven't done it for awhile, but if you go into your controls for the DOMAIN, wherever that lives, and change the nameservers to wherever you want it to go, it will make the break with the homestead site and then you will be able to delete the site.  Not 100% sure that still works, but it should.  I hope that helps you.

To unassociate a domain from a website, you need to go into your website builder or hosting platform's settings (like WordPress.com, GoDaddy, IONOS), find the domain management or DNS settings, and use the "Remove," "Delete," or "Detach" option for the specific domain connection, often found under the domain/hosting settings or a trash icon, to disconnect it before you delete the site itself.
General Steps (Platform-Specific)
  1. Log In: Sign in to your domain registrar (like GoDaddy) and your website hosting/builder account (like WordPress.com, WebflowGoogle DomainsMicrosoft 365, etc.).
  2. Find Domain Settings: Navigate to your dashboard and look for sections like "Domains," "Hosting," "Upgrades," or "Project Settings".
  3. Locate the Connection: Find the domain you want to unassociate. You might see it listed under connected domains or in the DNS records.
  4. Remove the Connection:
    • Look for an icon (like ⋮ or trash can) next to the domain.
    • Select "Remove," "Delete," or "Detach" from the menu or prompt.
    • Confirm the action in any pop-up windows.
  5. Verify DNS (If Needed): If you're using an external registrar, you might need to go to your registrar's DNS settings and remove the specific records (A records, CNAMEs) pointing to your old site.
  6. Delete the Website: Once the domain is detached, you can proceed to delete the actual website through its respective platform's settings.

@richard9532 Google: "I want to delete my Homestead website but keep my domain."

To remove your live website while keeping your domain name, you must first unassociate the domain from the site. Once detached, you can safely unpublish or delete your website files without losing your domain registration. [1, 2, 3]
Here are the exact steps to accomplish this:
Step 1: Detach the Domain [1]
  1. Log in to your Homestead Account Manager.
  2. Select Domains from the left-hand navigation menu.
  3. Locate your domain name and click Change Site Association.
  4. Unlink the domain from your current site (you can point it to a blank page, a holding page, or set it to unassigned).
  5. Click Save to confirm.

I Cannot unlink the domain from the current site or point it to any other site.  There is no option for "unassigned".  Other pages that I have are pointing to their own domains.  I have no other page to set it to.
