Cannot add TXT messages to my homestead website Domain

If you are unable to add TXT records to your Homestead domain, the issue is usually caused by one of two specific restrictions in the Homestead dashboard. [1, 2]
Reason 1: The record contains an underscore (_) or special characters
The Homestead customer control panel has a known limitation: it does not accept underscores (_) or special characters in the TXT record "Name" or "Host" field. If you are trying to add a DMARC record (which requires _dmarc) or a verification string like _webflow or _domainkey, the system will throw an error or block the submission. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • The Solution: You cannot bypass this yourself through the portal. You must contact Homestead Support directly and ask them to manually add the record with the underscore on the backend. Alternatively, support can help you route your DNS management through an external partner like Cloudflare, which permits standard special characters. [1, 2]
Reason 2: Your nameservers point elsewhere
If the options to add records are completely greyed out or missing, your domain's nameservers may be pointing to a third-party host (like GoDaddy, Route 53, or Namecheap). [1]
  • The Solution: If your domain is registered with Homestead but pointing elsewhere, you have to add the TXT record inside the dashboard of the company hosting your nameservers, not Homestead.
