mouseover and selected page colors

I have created a text navigation bar and have changed the styles effect to mouseover orange and selected page a different colour. It looks great in edit mode but one saved and published the navigation buttons go grey on mouseover and are grey on selected page? I have tried various combinations, made sure the nav bar was at the front but just cant get the colours I want to show. They keep coming up grey!!!!!! Dhoooo
