How do I add photos to my blog?

To add photos to your blog, you will first need to resize them.  Most computers come with some graphics editor that allows you to do this.  If you don't have one, you can also find free tools online.  Depending on your particular need, and your expectations, the picture can be pretty much any size, but I would say that the longer side should probably be good about 300-400 pixels.  Ultimately the decision is yours.  Make sure you keep a copy of the original file so you can try again if you make it too small for your liking.

Uploading the image

1) Launch Sitebuilder Plus

2)Click on the site name in the top right corner, then on View file manager.

3) You see the site name in the top left is highlighted.  This means you are in the root folder of your website.  Click on the Import button.

4) Select a file or files to upload.

5) Your file will be uploaded and you will see it in the list.  Note on the far right the yellow publish warning.  This means the picture, while uploaded, is not yet public on your site.  At this point you may highlight the image or images and hit the publish button in the file manager, or you may close the file manager and Publish the entire site from the editor.

Adding the image to a blog post

1) When creating a new post, give the post a title and add content.  When you are ready to add an image, click the insert image button.

2) Enter the URL of the image.  The URL is the site name plus the image name.  In this example, I do not have a domain name, so I enter http://testtemplatesdrew.homestead.com/index.jpg.  If you had a domain name, like drew.com, then I would enter http://www.drew.com/index.jpg.  I recommend you enter a brief description in the ALT text box as well.  Then click ok.

3) Now you will see your image in the post.  When you are finished with the post, hit publish post.

4) Click close.

5) Assuming the page your blog element is on, is published, you can go view it.

Note: This image is 225pixels x 225 pixels.

Hi George0083,

You add an image to the blog by using a URL.  Unfortunately you have to use the add image feature in Sitebuilder to get an image out of the image library.  Once you add the image to the page, then you can see the file name and remove the image from the page.

Thanks

Drew

My images only show on desktop; they don't show on mobile devices. Any idea why this is happening?

The image was not published. Also, it appears as though you used the preview URL for the image. The correct URL should be http://www.cortcontrol.com/doctor-in-lab.png

How come the links to my pictures in my blog keep breaking? They will look great one day and be broken the next. It doesn't make any sense.

Hello Cindy1395,

Looking at your blog it appears the Image URL is not the correct URL of the images. Please see the above article for steps on how to add the image again, and how to get the URL of the image for it to link properly.

I've just added my pictures to the file manager, but when I try to add them to my blog by inputting the url I keep getting a broken picture icon. Does the fact that my file manager shows me as hstrial-Cindy_Headley-7358 instead of CindyHeadley.com have anything to do with having a correct url? I have tried an url with both and it's not working.

Never mind! I didn't publish the picture once I added it to the list. Now it's working fine!

This is the most difficult blog I have ever tried to create; the frame window is so tiny you can only see fragments; you have to add photos the way we did in 1998; no drag and drop; no paste or upload directly from your computer; when will you guys bother to upgrade to the 21st century?! it takes allll day!

I agree. This is ridiculously cumbersome. I have followed the directions about naming the photo, but I still can't get the images to appear in my blog. How about a simple navigate to the photo process like you would find in any other software? This is very time consuming, and zero results so far! And please bump the size up - we're only human.

Your format for URL of images for someone who does not have a domain name is incorrect. It is http://homestead.com/BlogName/files/ImageFile.JPG

You should be able to use any URL that is valid. If the image is uploaded and published then the http://www.domainname.com/imagename.jpg should work.

What about the other things I mentioned, like being able to navigate to your photos and resize them, just as I can when I create any other webpage on homestead? I don't understand why you do not have the same functionality for your blog feature as everywhere else.

Kimara0309,

I see a few images that are listed as not published, but I see only 1 image in any of your blog posts and it displays. Which post is giving you the trouble?

It is the most recent post on Curcumin. I had a friend check the site and the image was gone. they told me there was a little black and gold box with a n X.  Do I have to publish the image too? How do I do that?

The last post that did that was Sleep deprivation, the picture was there for a few days then disappeared.  So I removed it from the post.

Kimara0309,

You used the URL for the image from within Sitebuilder. This will work, if you are logged in to your account, but not otherwise. You need to use the URL that your visitors would use which is http://www.yourdomain/imagename

I figured it out the other day.

You were right, the image itself was never published. I did that in the file manager and all was better.

You are using the incorrect URL. You are taking the URL from the preview. You need the public URL. This would be http://yourdomain/imagename.

I found these directions very helpful, but I am experiencing a lot of delays in posting pictures to my blog. It seems that I have to enter and re-enter the URL multiple times before the server will accept the info. I've tried saving, going out to the file manager to check the URL address to be sure, going back to re-enter. The system seems finicky, and I end up wasting a lot of time over this. What can be done to improve the situation (on my end or on yours)?

You definitely should not need to enter the URL multiple times. When you add it the first time are you saying that it doesn't save it? What browser do you use? Have you already uploaded and published the images when you add the URL?

Yes, I have already uploaded and published the images before I add the URL. What's been happening when I enter the URL is that the picture shows for a split second, but then the URL box returns empty (forcing me to re-enter the info).

In playing with the system, I seem to have better luck when I wait five seconds or so before submitting (time for a quick prayer--please, please, please work!). I type fast (about 80 words a minute), and perhaps the system can't process that fast when I hit "enter" immediately after typing the info?

I have never seen that happen before. I am not sure the typing speed would matter, but I suppose it could. Certainly after the enter key is hit. I have seen some weird thing happen based on an individuals browser installation and settings. If you have a chance can you try doing it Chrome and see if the issue exists there?

Dianamarie9257, You need to add them via the URL individually.

Here are just two ideas that would make it a bit better.

First, you should be able to quickly grab the url of any file in the File manager. That would make it easier to use a photo in a blog entry. This entry should be in the File Manager on the left, in the same place that other file attributes are shown. The ability to capture the url there would make it a bit easier when needing a direct link to the item

Type: Image File

Size: 22 KB
Created: 02/16/2018 08:14:31 PST
Last Modified: 02/16/2018 08:14:31 PST
Last Published: 02/16/2018 08:14:31 PST
Status: published version is up to date

Second, when you access the blog from the Websites Manager tab, there should be a link to the File Manager. Otherwise, if you need to use a file from the file manager (or upload a new one) you have to close the blog, and access it from the editing screen on the page the blog resides.

For that matter, there should be a tool to upload an image right on the blog page, and have it automatically appear in a folder in the File Manager.

What the chance of seeing improvements to the blog tool?
