Note: We want to provide a few common and useful snippets for your use, but our support department is not able to assist you with editing code. They can help you with code placement.
All 3 major search engines have said that these keywords hold no weight in terms of ranking. If you have words that must be considered key to your business, you must have it in the content of your web pages. They have also noted that excessive meta keyword use(stuffing) could actually penalize you. If you use popular search words that the search engines do not consider relevant to your site, then they will also penalize your ranking. Please be careful if you choose to add meta keywords.

Still, you can add meta tags in the head tag, using the following code.

<meta name="description" content="Free Web tutorials">
<meta name="keywords" content="HTML,CSS,XML,JavaScript">
<meta name="author" content="Hege Refsnes">
You can use any or all of these lines. The description is already available in Sitebuilder, but this snippet will override Sitebuilder.

Someone with our organization asked about our website keyword tags so the site will show up with more searches - what is that?

This should help with the keywords Sue.  They really just need to be in the website content, but you can add them as above as well.  It won't hurt, but it really doesn't help anymore.

Thanks

You can manually add a keyword tag as shown above, but most people no longer take the time to do this as Google has made it public knowledge that they no longer use it.  It's far more important to integrate yoru keywords into the main text of your site.

Hi Mike,
So it's best if I add key words in my pages. If that is so, when I include them is it best to make them bold? or what do you reccomend to stand out.  Thanks Mike

Yes, you can add them in the body/text and bold them if you wish, but, there are other strategies that you'll want to explore. This web page is a good place to start your research and learn the basics of SEO: https://community.homestead.com/homestead/topics/what_can_i_do_to_improve_my_search_engine_rankings

Also, if you use the search tool at the top of this page you'll find several SEO related help topics.

Advanced settings.

I want to create "meta tags". I used them with SiteBuilder but it looks like SB+ is using "advanced settings" under "page settings". It ask for "code", html, that I am not familiar with. Will having proper html code inserted improve my chances to attract visitor using Google Search? If so, how do I handle this? Does Homestead have an SEO service at my disposal?

Good morning themieleman,

Here is the code for adding keywords to your header.  The search engines don't really look at them anymore.  It won't hurt, but won't help either.  The keywords must be in your organic content on your web pages to be effective.

We do have some services for SEO.  Take a look at this topic and let us know if you have any questions or wish to speak to one of our SEO consultants.

Thanks

The topic reviews aspects covered by our monthly fees. "You will want to begin your SEO by making sure you are submitted to Search Engines."  Does my Homestead business website fee cover submitting my website to these search engines?

themieleman,   No your hosting plan does not include any search engine submissions. You'll want go to Google and do that. There's no cost to doing a basic submission. You'll probably want to go to Google and open up a Webmaster account as there are some more advanced tools you'll have access to in addition to the basic submission.

Mike: I'm going to open another website and develop it concurrently with the one I'm using. Are all of the templates displayed in the Homestead gallery using the wide screen format? If not, how will I know the difference?

I opened my site from store location and the  webpages look different. For example, the position of a facebook "like" icon was not placed as I placed it at my home office terminal. I had it layered on my page menu and it moved to cover the menu copy. I was using chrome on both machines. The page view was very narrow and the page view here is wide and both monitors are exactly the same. Both are running windows 7.

Good morning themieleman,

All of the templates are set to 980 pixels wide.  You are able to change this in the page settings if you like.

Thanks

I see! I can change my current site to conform to the wider screen. I did not know that! Easy! It's only taken me two years to discover that feature. I realize that doesn't change the width of the template but it does provide me with more geography to develop. Also, the narrower format works better with cell phones.

I really don't think there is a technical max, however, the most commonly used screen resolution is now 1366.  Still, a full 22% of all resolutions is less than that.  The number will drop, but I am not sure I would go over 1200 yet, but it is your choice.

Gotcha! Now that I know, I'll be able to experiment. You know, I called into Homestead for some help a long time ago and the consultant changed the size but didn't offer to tell me what or how she did it. I asked a question, she made the maneuver and I responded with "Gee that looks different. What did you do. She said simply "I changed the width." I really don't recall if the width had anything to do with my reason for calling. I did notice the difference but never interpreted the maneuver. 980 is a long way from 1366. Will they be making templates 1200+? "Thanks Drew!

Hi David7109,  This is probably the thread/instructions you are looking for, but, just so you know most search engines no longer use the keyword metatag any longer.

You can follow these instructions to add them, but they really aren't necessary.  It is far more important to have the words on your website in the natural flow of the content.

The keywords need to be part of the natural content of your website. You can add the meta keywords, but they are not used by search engines any longer.

I wanted to use the advanced page settings to set some key words to the site. However when published the key words appear at the top of the site. I believed it should be invisible to the website. But used only for SEO purposes?

For more in depth information on meta tags, I would search for that on Google. There is a lot of information out there on the subject, including programs that generate this code. We would not provide more in depth information on meta tags, but once you have the information you need, we can show you where to place them.

Elyzabeth, with current search engine algorithms and Homestead's new builder, how important is it that we add our own tags and keywords? I'm assuming a lot of that is now built in.

It is very important that you add good page titles and descriptions, but meta keywords are completely disregarded by the search engines now. Keywords are taken from the content on your webpages, so you want to be sure to add good text to your website.
