Gallery for desktop, but how to disable in mobile?

In my gallery on the desktop I like it for the most part, but in mobile it's useless and confusing. How can I set the mobile gallery pics to just be links when clicked on, and not pop up into the slideshow?

Bonus question is, can I set my gallery photos to be the links in the desktop instead of that wonky link icon? Also, you can't close out of the gallery without hitting the tiny X.  Clicking outside the picture area should close it normally.  

I realllly love my website, but there are several weird issues that don't make since.
