WebsiteBuilder: Google Analytics

WebsiteBuilder: Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytic program offered by Google. It allows you to see where visitors come from, what they do when they reach your site, and how long they are there for. It also allows you to track information like what browser or device type is most often used to view your pages.

With this information, you can make changes and corrections to your site to maximize page views. We highly recommend you use a service like Google Analytics alongside your Homestead site to get the most out of your hosting. To start using Google Analytics, you'll need to connect the account to your website. We have made this as easy as possible.

  • Create a Google Analytics account, if you haven't already. Click the following link, click Start For Free, and choose Sign Up:

    https://www.google.com/analytics

  • Fill out the Account Name, Website Name, Website URL, http or https, etc.
Once you are done, click Get Tracking ID at the bottom.

  • On the next page, you will see a Tracking ID. It will look like this. (I've crossed mine out to discourage people from trying to use it. You will get a different one)
    Copy the whole ID (UA-XXXXXXXX-Y)

  • Log into your Website Builder. Click Manage on the left, then click Google Analytics. Paste the Tracking ID you copied into this field and click Add Analytics

Give it up to 24 hours to update. Then you can start tracking!

Do I have to do this for every page on my web site or just the main domain? Does it track individual pages or does each web page need its own ID? Thanks

Hello,

This sounds like that may be the google tag manager. The fastest way to find the UA code for each property, is to click “All Accounts” at the top of the screen to activate the dropdown menu, then locate the account and in the middle column and you will see the UA number below the Property.

Hello,

Once the Google analytics account is created there should be a UA or tracking ID provided. This can then be copied and added to the WebsiteBuilder editor under manage> google analytics. Where are you having trouble?

I added https for my site. Do I need to add a new tracking ID now for google analytics?

Hello,

It should be able to record the traffic still, unless you see it not working, at that point you can redo the setup.

It is showing both versions http and https. The http shows the traffic and https shows zero traffic.

If it allows you to submit the URL, add the https domain to the google analytics account.

Yes - I have done that. That's what I mean by "both versions" above. But only my original http:// shows traffic.

https:// doesn't show any traffic.

What is the domain? I can verify the SSL is active. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to diagnose why Google analytics is not reporting stats for the HTTPS URL, you can search for information on how to receive stats from support. https://support.google.com/analytics/?hl=en#topic=9143232

Where would I add the script for the Google Analytics 4 tracking code? Can I place it in the site meta tags section?

Hello,

If it doesn't give you a UA code to input, you may be able to place code under Manage > Advanced > Site HTML

I have a UA code from the previous version of Analytics.

  • Do I need to obtain a new UA code or is the old one sufficient?
  • Also, does the new tracking code for Analytics 4 need to be placed on each page as shown below?

Hello,

I do believe GA4 requires a code that begins with a G, which you'll be able to input into the editor now. You shouldn't need to place code.

To move from UA to GA4, what platform am I to install it on?

I have a GA4 code but when I add it to the Analytic setting of the Homestead website it doesn't do anything. When I go back to test the code on Analytics it says failed. Do I need to add the script to the header of each page and if so how do I do that if the website is a template? Below is a screenshot

The next step is to install the Google tag (copy and paste the html after the <head> on each page) but I don't see how to reveal the html on each page?
