domain privacy?

Hello, I'm going to register my site for a domain and I think it had something about domain privacy (I'm pretty sure that's what it was called) and that it was recommended and it was an extra $10 on top of the usual fees.  I clicked on the link that is supposed to explain what it is but it did not work.  Just wondering what it is before I decided to pay for it or not.  Thanks!
