Creating a new Home page

How do I create a new index/home page while saving the current one under a different page name?  I want to create a new home page for one of my websites and was told a while back that I could do that and once done, save the new page as index and the old home page under a different title?  Just need a quick rundown on the "how to" so that I can make sure I am proceeding correctly.  Thanks :)
