Excessive Spam messages

The amount of incoming spam messages is overwhelming!  I have set up a few filters, but cannot keep up with the various combinations of subject lines, email addresses because they use 0 for O, 1 for I and many more.  The filters are also causing some legitimate messages to go to junk.  Please help!  There has to be some way on your end to block these before getting to my inbox.

Hello Good Day!

Spam emails are unsolicited messages that often contain advertisements, phishing attempts, or malicious links. While filters can reduce the volume of spam, it’s difficult to eliminate them completely because spammers constantly change tactics to bypass detection.

Recommendations to Reduce Spam:

Scan All Devices:

  • Run a full antivirus and malware scan on every device you use to access your email.
  • Ensure the devices are clean before making any account changes.

Update Your Password:

  • Once scans confirm your devices are clear, update your email password.
  • Use a strong password that includes uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Avoid reusing old passwords or simple patterns.

Enable Filtering and Blocking:

  • Use your email provider’s spam filter settings to automatically move suspicious emails to the junk folder.
  • Block specific senders or domains that repeatedly send spam.
  • Be Cautious with Links and Attachments:
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails.
  • Even if the email looks legitimate, verify the sender before taking action.

Domain-Level Checks:

Please share your domain name here so we can perform further checks.

  • Sometimes spam issues are related to domain configuration or reputation, which can be addressed at the server level.

Spam cannot be completely eliminated, but by combining device security, strong passwords, filtering, and domain checks, you can significantly reduce its impact and protect your account.

Me too!  It is just craziness.  It is always the same words in the subject line just mixed around.  Cannot get a grip on it using the Homestead filters.  I maxed it out.  If there are many of us with this problem, surely it will be something on Homestead's end.  Fingers crossed.

I called the Tech Support line and actually got to speak with someone!  (In India, I'm sure.)  However, she looked at my emails, the filters I've created and listened to my frustration, even testing messages.  I'm unwilling to move every that comes in to discard because there have been some legit messages going to junk.  She is going to escalate the issue and follow-up with an email.  An email I received a short time ago said:

"This is regarding your email with Homestead about spam emails. At the moment, our back-end team is still working to fix the spam issue. While waiting for their advice, please set the Filter action to 'Discard' for unwanted emails. Kindly note that sometimes emails from Homestead may be routed to the Junk folder."

I'll be patient, but not for long.  I've got a business to run and I don't have time to be sorting through all these spam messages.  Maybe I should bill for my time??  ;o)

Maybe if more people called Tech Support, it would help.  1-800-710-1998

Why are we suddenly being flooded with spam?

This cannot be a coincidence. Something has clearly changed on Homestead's side, because the volume of spam we are now receiving is completely unacceptable. After years of operating without this level of abuse, we are now being overwhelmed with junk email.

We need a clear explanation of what has changed and, more importantly, what is being done to fix it. If Homestead can no longer provide reliable email protection and service, then we will have no choice but to move our email and websites elsewhere.

After more than 30 years as a customer, it is extremely disappointing to be put in this position. Loyalty should be valued, not met with deteriorating service and a lack of accountability.

Hi,

Please add a filter to block the sender’s email address to prevent further unwanted messages. Aside from the recommendations we’ve already provided, the final option is to upgrade your email to Google Workspace, which offers advanced spam protection and a strong sender reputation.

Google Workspace includes:

  • Enhanced spam filtering: Automatically detects and blocks suspicious or harmful emails before they reach your inbox.

  • Improved email reputation: Reduces the likelihood of your domain being flagged or targeted by spam senders.

  • Secure infrastructure: Built-in protection against phishing, malware, and unauthorized access.

  • Professional management tools: Allows you to control user access, apply security policies, and monitor email activity.

Upgrading ensures your account maintains high deliverability and minimizes spam exposure.

Thank you.

Thank you for letting us know about the spam emails you’ve been receiving. We’ll report these cases accordingly. On your end, if you connect your email to Outlook 365 or Gmail, you can also report unwanted emails as spam directly through those platforms.

In RoundCube, you already have the option to create filters, which can help reduce the number of spam messages reaching your inbox. Please note, however, that spam is an ongoing issue,  as soon as one group of spammers is taken down, new ones often appear.

Another recommendation is to avoid publishing your email address directly on your website, since it can be crawled and collected by spammers. Using a contact form instead of a visible email address can help minimize exposure.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to improve protections against spam. Thank you

Hello,

We have updated the DNS records of your email servers and the SPF record for gsheehan.com and llcmiami.com. If you are still receiving spam, please try the following options:

  1. Add a manual filter in Roundcube – Block specific sender email addresses directly from your webmail.

  2. Create a Cloudflare (CF) configuration – Add DMARC and DKIM records to strengthen email authentication and reduce spoofing.

  3. Upgrade to Google Workspace – This provides advanced spam filtering, improved sender reputation, and enhanced security features to minimize unwanted emails.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, upgrading to Google Workspace is the most effective long‑term solution.

Please let us know if you need further assistance, or contact us at Phone Support: 1-800-710-1998. Thank you

@judelyn9690 I have done what I can (adding to the filters, changing password), but Cloudflare and upgrading to google workspace are beyond my area of expertise!  I can not keep up with the various iterations of email addresses and subject lines "they" are using.  If you can help me this way, please let me know.  Otherwise, I guess I'll have to contact phone support.

I read this when looking for answers and was hoping that it would not come down to this as this is way over my head.  So frustrating that this is falling on us as end users.  I do not understand the need to use Google workspace or Cloudflare.  Seems like there should have been a public release notice as to the changes required to something they must have changed internally.  Sorry I am not able to be of much help other than to grumble.  Whatever you find out, please come back and post.  We would all appreciate it.

Hello,

We were unable to verify if the DNS records in Cloudflare (CF) for your domains have been configured correctly, as the system is requesting a verification code.

Kindly refer to the DNS settings provided below to ensure proper configuration. Please make sure to complete the verification process once the changes are applied.

Thank you.

@astressless1 I'm on hold, hoping that I can get the two-step verification done - Homestead set up all the Cloudflare accounts - but then the verification code comes to me - so that's why they get kicked out - and I have no sign in authorization to fix myself.  So hoping that tech support phone call will at least get a look at my settings.  I've had this email - for over 7 years and never never have had this issue.  It's got to be an internal change, will let everyone know if I get anywhere

@astressless1 I went into filters and added about 15 key words that appear within the junk email and it worked.  I diverted them to the Junk folder to see if it would work.  Whala!  It worked!  They did not appear in my Inbox!  The only issue is that I had to review what was in the Junk folder because there were some valid emails so some retraining needs to be for Roundcube.  I moved them to the Inbox and was asked if this is where I wanted them to go in the future instead of the Junk folder.  There was an option when setting the filters to have the items to be discarded but I need to have confidence that valid emails are not being routed to Junk or disgarded.  At least my Inbox is not being overrun with junk.  Give it a try.  Select Settings, then Filter.

has anyone found out anything about this?  I getting over 300 spam emails in ONE DAY!!!  Im considering changing to another web host if Homestead can't get their act together on this.  I think it is ridiculous that we have to purchase Google Workspace to get this to stop....or even slow down  We are paying enough already to use this web host.  Why can't they just fix it.   Any new feedback with hope for the masses dealing with this would be greatly appreaited!

So, I just got off the phone, my records are fine, and the back office says that there is NO issues on their server end, and that 'spam happens'.  Hum.  So the workaround, if you do sign on to Roundcube, is that you can find filters under settings, BUT you are then required to put in contains - which was explained that it is every spam id or words - in other words you need a filter for each 'spammer'.  In my case, that's about 300 for the past week.  In outlook, I have marked them as junk - they have come back anyway.  I've been a homestead customer since about 1996 or so, and never had this happen where they couldn't fix it.  Love the website design and ease - so I think my solution will be to take my email to google workspace.  I've asked them to have community put up a detailed blog with specifics for all relief of this spam issue.  I've also asked them to re-look at this - as I'm sure that spam just didn't happen to all of us here.  Sorry, didn't get better answers.

Thanks for your persistence!  Like you, I have done all that I can, trying to keep up with the myriad of email address/subject line iterations 0 for O, I for 1, you name it!  Let's just keep them as best we can.  We shouldn't have to be the ones troubleshooting these issues and "spam happens" is not an acceptable response!  (humble opinion)

@judelyn9690 this is ridiculous!  In 24 hours I’ve received 300 messages!  Most have gone to junk because of the filters I’ve set up.  You offer these various suggestions but no instruction.  If I have to pay to move my email to Google Workspace, I might as well find a different website host.  I have been with Homestead for 14 years.  Pushing this off on the end user, your customers, is unacceptable. Something must have happened internally at homestead/Roundcube.  If I and others have to do all this work, perhaps you could offer a discount on our monthly charge.

Just FYI, I did move my email on my one domain to googleworkspace,  2 days later I got a notice from Cloud flare they were deleting my account. ( of course it came in at 5pm on a Friday night - leaving me stressed the whole weekend) Doubling checking with homestead via phone this morning, my domains are OK and there is no issue with homestead 'deleting' my account. The explanation was that cloudflare was providing security, mostly for the emails and that when I moved the email to googleworkspace, it no longer pointed to them - so Cloudflare redirected it back to homestead for the website - and the email to google.  CRAZY workaround issues but I took on the full job myself to move the emails for my domain to googleworkspace, and it was a bit complicated so if you don't feel comfortable with advanced DNS and commands, I would suggest you find somewhere for assistance to do so.  I'm not sure if the phone help with homestead will do this or not.  Again, I asked that homestead - try to fix the email issue, and just maybe this is a cloudflare issue? and if not, to give better guidance for ALL the steps to manage it.  Hope this helps someone who is out there with this issue.

We have been getting so much spam over the last few days, from those brands that others listed above, that we can barely keep up.  Over 200 spam emails in the last 2 days alone. What is going on?!  From the posts above, this is obviously a Homestead issue and needs to be fixed immediately.  We should not have pay to redirect our emails to another platform/app to fix this.

It has been a month and a half and I'm FINALLY seeing a dramatic reduction in the "funky" spam messages.

While it appears our issues and frustrations have been heard, it's disappointing to have been on the receiving end of what can only be described as gaslighting responses from/by Homestead representatives/community members.  If you don't know why something is happening, just tell us.  And then keep us posted on what is being done.

I hope others who were experiencing the ungodly amount of spam messages are also seeing a reduction!

This... 100%.  Life happens - especially with technology.  But how you communicate and respond to it, especially to your loyal customers, matters.
