switch domain names

Hey all!

Quick question and thank you in advance!  Last week (with help of tech support, which was awesome), I was able to delete one of my three sites I have on Homestead to build a completely new site; tech suggested I keep the existing domain in place and build the new site using it.

I bought a new domain to replace the old one, and the new site is ready--how do I switch them out?

Probably a stupid question but I appreciate the help and hope it's easy!

how do i change the domain name on my homestead website?
To change your domain name on
Homestead, the process depends on whether you are switching to a completely new name or just moving an existing domain to a different site in your account.
Option 1: Switch to a Brand New Domain
If you want to use a name you don’t yet own, you cannot "edit" your current domain. You must register a new one and then swap it.
  1. Register the new domain: In your account, go to the Domains tab and use the Get a New Domain search box.
  2. Delete the old domain (optional): If you no longer want the old one, find it in the Domain Manager and click Delete. Note that deleting a domain removes all associated emails and search rankings.
Option 2: Point an Existing Domain to a Different Site
If you already have a second domain or website in your account and want to swap which one is live, use Site Association
  1. Log in and click Domains in the left navigation menu.
  2. Find the domain you want to use and click Change Site Association.
  3. Choose the specific website from the drop-down menu and click Save.
  4. If using WebsiteBuilder, go to the Websites Manager, click Edit Site, and then Publish to make the change live.
Option 3: Use a Domain from Another Provider
If you bought your domain elsewhere (like GoDaddy or Namecheap), you must "point" it to Homestead.
  • In your Homestead account, go to Domains and select Use a Domain You Already Own.
  • Follow the prompts to either transfer the domain fully or just point it using Homestead's nameservers.
Note: Changes to domain settings or associations can take a few hours to 48 hours to fully propagate across the internet.
