I received this email and they want $64. Is this legit?

As of January 1, 2014, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has mandated that all ICANN accredited registrars begin verifying the WHOIS contact information for all new domain registrations and Registrant contact modifications. Your domain name cuppy5.com is pending for Whois protection registration. This solicitation is to inform you that it's time to send in your whois domain protection registration for 04/06/2017. Failure to complete this order by 04/06/2017 may result in the cancellation of this solicitation (making it difficult for your customers to locate you, using search engines on the web). We do not register or renew domain names. We sell whois domain protection registration.

Act today! This solicitation for cuppy5.com will expire on 04/06/2017. Act today!

There is such a thing - basically the services protect the domain from being transferred or lost if you fail to renew within a certain time period. HOWEVER, if your domain is with Homestead those items are already seen to and you can delete the email. If your domain isn't with Homestead then you'd want to check with the domain host to see what protection they offer. There are many different services out there, but buyer beware.

Ken, In this case I believe that to be a total scam. Your domain appears to be pointed to Homestead and is registered at GoDaddy. It is locked and so should be safe. Further, domains are registered in years. Your current date is Registrar Registration Expiration Date: 2017-09-23T18:48:23Z, so I am not sure what they are saying about 4/6. If you have additional questions check with GoDaddy, but I do suspect it is not legit. What was the sending email address?

What I gleaned from that letter is that they are selling the protection service and saying that if he doesn't order by 4/6 it may result in the cancellation of this solicitation. They've tossed in language to make it appear that it's the domain that needs to be registered or whatever. I love the part about "may result in the cancellation of this solicitation" - in other words if Ken doesn't fall for their scheme he may never hear from them again. Oh darn, right?  :)

Oh yes. I do see that. I missed that somehow. I have never seen this protection thing. All registrars offer a locking service as far as I know. I am not sure what more protection could be added, but I suppose it is possible. The only thing I can think of is domain privacy, which simply blocks a whois search from displaying your name and address. That price is ridiculous though.
