I recently received from Homestead an email with Subj line: "WHOIS Data Confirmation for [my domain name]."  It includes dozens of lines of info, most of which I don't recognize.  Most or all of it relates to Tucows.com or Contact Privacy Inc., at 96 Mowat Ave, Toronto. I don't know what these organizations are.

Is this okay?  Is it all normal stuff that operates in a black box underlying my website?

Yes it is. You can see your information if you go to the domains tab and click on edit contact info. It is important that you keep that information up to date. If you change anything you will probably get an email asking you to confirm the changes. You must do this.
