They just keep coming and coming and coming???

Maureen3927,

Just wanted to let you know that I have not received your email. Did you send it from your Verizon account, or a different email address?

The email was sent from my verizon account. I am now up to 1342 spams since 11 am this morning. Please send an email with a contact number, or call me at my contact number so we can resolve this. The post you have just posted pertaining to the spam problem does not relate to me. This is something completely out of control and different and needs to be addressed somehow. Thank you.

Hi Maureen3927, I just took a look in the account. Those are not spam messages. Those are bounce/undeliverable messages. This means that your account has been hacked (unless you are sending massive amounts of email) and someone is using your email to send spam. Everyone of those bounce messages you are receiving are for the undeliverable messages that are being blocked.

The most common way that email accounts are hacked is by either having a password that is too simple, or, having some malicious software installed on your computer (keyloggers), which track your keystrokes and communicate all your passwords to the hacker.

You'll want to immediately run a full virus scan on your computer, and then change your password to something more complex. If you include upper and lower case letters, numbers, and at least one special character it will be nearly impossible for someone to hack again.

As soon as you are done scanning your computer follow the steps here to reset the email password: https://community.homestead.com/homes...

How many are you getting per day? and from how many different senders?

Also, are these actual spam emails, or are you getting email bounce messages?

Hi Mike,
Just saw your response here.
I am receiving about 50 - 75 spam emails per day now. All of them spam. None bounce backs.

We are as well! And, have been receiving a handful of "junk" per day for some time now, which started suddenly a month or so ago having rarely received any prior. Blocking the domain name seems to have no effect.

Also... and, this is interesting... incoming e-mail is "dated" about 27 minutes BEFORE it is actually received! Immediate responses to outgoing e-mail are showing as having been received BEFORE the initial e-mail was sent!! Not critical... Just strange.

Keep up the good work Mike! TGF

Official Response
Regarding the spam issues that some of you are having, I would like to communicate what is happening. If you've been tracking our email issues over the last few months, we've been going through a lot of changes.

Several weeks ago we did install some new servers as we had some significant problems with the old servers. As of right now the email platform (Zimbra), has not changed but it will be in the coming weeks. We will be switching to a new system called OpenXchange but it will take about two months minimum (maybe longer) to complete the process as we have millions of accounts to migrate. See announcement here. https://community.homestead.com/homes...

As of now, your outgoing mail is being scanned by our new spam filter and it is much more sophisticated and a bit more strict than the old filter. The filter that is currently scanning your incoming mail is a temporary system, and unfortunately not as sophisticated, and the reason that some of you are receiving an unusual amount of spam. We've discussed this issue with our email admins and the current setting appears to be the best setting to not block legitimate incoming email, and still eliminate most of the spam. Because it is more critical for our customers to not miss important/business/legitimate emails, than it is to receive some spam, it is unlikely that they will change the settings at this time. However, once all of our email accounts have been converted to the new OX email platform, all incoming and outgoing mail will then be scanned by the new filter and eliminate nearly all of the spam issues you are all having. Unfortunately it will take several weeks, maybe a couple months or longer to complete this upgrade.

At this time if you are repeatedly getting the same spam over and over the best thing you can do is to set up a keyword or email address based filter in your email program and direct those messages to your junk/trash folder.

To create filters or rules visit this thread. .

Hi Mike,
I have run a full system scan for viruses that has come up clean. I have also changed my password on the homestead email account. I have not received any of the bounce back emails in my junk mail since you looked into the problem and since doing the above.
I have also since sent some test emails from my verizon.net account to the homestead email in question. I can receive emails to the homestead account, but anything I send from it goes directly into the junk folder as a “delivery status notification” of being undeliverable. So my account will not allow me to send emails?
What do I do now?
Thanks

Since someone was obviously spamming with your account, there's a good chance your Homestead email address is on some blacklists. Can you try sending an email to a few different addresses and see if you get bounces from all of them?

Is someone working on this, my email is now blocked from my accessing it with my new password, but you do not have the new password to work on it. What is the status? I am unable to receive emails, you will need to respond thru this chat.

I have tried to reset my password again, once it is done, it says it was successful, until trying to login in with it, it does not work. Very frustrated as I do not have an operating email. This is not allowing me to send or receive communication with clients :(

Good morning. I am sorry for this. The mail admins realized that your email was hacked and closed the box to prevent spamming. Since you ran the scan I will reopen the box now. You will need to changed the password again as of right now to regain access to the mailbox. We require a password of 8-14 characters with at least 1 upper case and 1 lower case letter, but recommend something stronger, with numbers and special characters.

Thanks

Drew

Yes, I did, and at first it allowed the password, then it froze and will not allow it. I am still receiving bounce backs in my junk file and cannot send anything, it gets stuck in my outbox.

I don't. I will change it and see what I can find out. You will then need to change it again. I will let you know.

Thanks

Ok, so here is what I see. The bounce backs you aer getting on old emails are going to stop overtime. When your account was hacked, those thousands of messages went out. Once out there, they will be delivered or returned, so once one of those ttwo things happen to each message it will end.

As for sending, unfortunately, the hack has also caused you to be flagged as a spammer. I should be able to find out more about this, but not until Monday at the earliest. It is possible that your block will free itself before then, but I can't promise it. It appears that many sources have flagged you, so each one will clear you in their own time. I have placed a note on my calendar to take a look again, but I suspect this is going to become a waiting game.

I changed the password and was able to log in and out several times, so change it again and give it a try.

Sorry for the news
