What is the status of this ongoing email issue?

We are terribly sorry for the ongoing email issues and not having an ETA for when will be resolved. For anyone who has not been following the situation here is a summary.

Homestead recently implemented a new spam filter which has had some repercussions. Many customers are experiencing slowness and delivery problems due to an unusual amount of spam. In addition some customer email accounts are not showing up on the Email Manager screen. Our email admins are working diligently to fix the problem by building new email servers with an improved spam filter. It will take some time to get the new servers installed and configured as well as get any remaining black lists issues resolved. Since this is a major upgrade there are numerous complexities we are dealing with. Therefore we still do not have a definitive ETA.


What can I do?

1. If you need an update on the email situation, you can visit the announcement thread here.

2. We understand that for many of you, your email is a critical component of your business. Since we do not have an ETA, you may wish to set up an email account through another provider such as Zoho, or Google.

3. If you do create an email account with a different provider you will need to update your MX records through the Domain Manager screen on Homestead.com See instructions

This thread will remain open for questions if anyone needs help changing their MX records, please post below.

Hi Mike! One of my email addresses: info@scboise.com, just received 104 undeliverable messages since 1:00 AM last night. I am guessing that it was hacked somehow and it may not be related to this thread but I was wondering if you could check it. Below is the text of one of the emails. The original email subject is "Sexy local babe..." They're all similar...

Oh. You might need to change it again as when you said it may have been hacked, I immediately changed it. My only other option is too shut down all your email accounts, which I didn't want to do at this point.

A key logger is malware that can log the keystrokes you make and relay back to whoever wants the information.

Ha. Yes I changed the password again. Don't shut anything down. It's just this email address that I know of and the password on it was "password" so I'm sure that's how it was hacked. I actually don't monitor that address, one of my clients does. I will have her run a virus scan on her computer. I'll do it on my end too just in case...

Not getting emails timely at all today. WHY??? Why are there still issues? I am receiving emails 8 hours after they were sent, and I have someone still waiting on an email from me I sent two hours ago. I have two accounts, and am really tired of guesstimating whether my emails are coming in/going out correctly. An estimated time on when you guys plan to have this problem fixed once and for all is the least you can do after a month of this crap. Also, I want a refund for the month. Please direct me to the proper channels for this.

I will look into this. The servers have been working normally for a few days now. We are still clearing up a few issues with blacklists, but delays should not be occurring on our end.

To discuss any credits, you will need to use online chat or call a phone representative during business hours.

Do you notice any difference in email service between your 2 domains? How do you check your email?

This is not our issue. 198.182.162.228 belongs to the mail server of the state of Maine. They have some policy that your message violated. I do not see what that policy is, but it might be the size of a file attachment.

WHY are there still delays in delivering INCOMING emails? You keep saying things are fixed but they are not.
On 10/18 I'm getting a TON of emails dated 10/15 from multiple sources. Just got another barf-load of 35 old emails that I should have gotten 3 days ago!

Late yesterday afternoon, they made some successful adjustments to the spam filter that are doing a better job of letting legitimate emails through, and stopping more of the spam. This is likely the reason some of the emails were let through. Going forward, you should not see this sort of delay and you should notice drastic improvement in the amount of spam that comes through. If not please let us know.

so are you really saying that I am still NOT getting ALL my legit emails? the still-delayed emails are no different from the ones I am getting - some of the same senders and subject lines

There are a variety of reasons that emails could be delayed, this is just one possibility, but, if you were getting emails from those people before and only some of the messages are delayed, it could be a different problem, or the specific emails could have spamlike characteristics.

no "spamlike" characteristics. Just delayed because homestead email is not working right. Some of those emails were important potential orders that I now lost due to no response. thanks for that. Others were just routine emails of the kind I get dozens of per day. But I do need to know that ALL legit email sent to me will be in my inbox within a reasonable amount of time. That's not happening. This isn't a fluke - it's a real problem that homestead still appears to be ignoring or downplaying while at the same time telling us that things are fixed..

I realize this is very frustrating for you. The best answer I have is the same as I already posted below:

Our email admins confirmed that there was a batch of emails which were queued and released after the recent adjustment that was made. I agree that there should have been some more proactive communication around that issue. This specific instance has already been addressed by our management team.

Unfortunately, I can not guarantee that the email is working perfectly right now or ever. Anytime you are dealing with an issue as complex as this one there are a large number of unpredictable things that could occur. I can assure you that our management team is well aware of the impact that this has had on many of you and that we have the best people possible working on this daily.

It is our highest priority to restore, maintain and improve all of our services and earn the trust of everyone of our customers."

Same thing here! Today I am receiving emails, dated October 15th...It would be really helpful, if you guys would give us a warning.
What about emails that we sent out? Were those delayed as well? Are people that I emailed on the 15th receiving those emails today?

Nearly all blacklists are cleared however it does depend on individual IP addresses. If you happen to get a blacklist error, please post the message here.

I am getting the exact same error message on every single email I send. I get emails just finE, but since last Thursday, I have not been able to send an email. As I noted, when I send an email with an attachment or not, this is the error message I get.

I was asked to forward all of my returned emails and the error associated with it to a guy by the name of Drew. Well I have sent him oh....about 47 emails. Is Tthiis just me, or does this seem a bit on the "Mickey Mouse" operation side when I am told by three different members of Homestead on Chat to send to "some guy named Drew". I was never given who he his, why he matters, his last name, nothing. Furthermore, I was beyond mad, but supper pissed when I have been repeatedly told that I would not be notified when this round of email issues would be resolved. I would need to "just keep trying". In addition, the email problems........THEY'RE NOT FIXED NOR HAVE THEY BEEN IN ABOUT A MONTH! IT IS ALWAYS SOMETHING. WOW! COMICAL!

Hi Patrick1911, Drew is a real person and he is collecting all email errors and related information and getting it to the email admins so that they can research the errors. Can you post one of the error messages here? I'll take a look at it and double check to make sure it's been passed along, or see if I can determine the cause. You can delete my original query all you want. People do get upset when you say something is fixed and it isn't. You claim to have made tweaks to control spam, which oh, by the way MIGHT affect emails (IT HAS) but didn't bother to tell anyone?? Oct. 15th emails arriving the afternoon of the 18th is ridiculous when you claim everything is "up and running". This company has screwed the pooch so many times over the past month, affecting so many people it is almost laughable now to see you guys claim everything is great. It still isn't. It is YOUR responsibility to let your CUSTOMERS know when your servers are being tweaked in case of service interruption. People have lost business because of this. It is nothing to take lightly, and once again, the problems continue. So, are you guaranteeing everything is working perfectly now? Is that what we are to believe?

Cant believe they are telling us to set up another E-mail account with Gmail
Lame. I shipped orders late because of this and thats can effect future orders.

After seeing a bunch of people on here complain about not receiving their emails from 10/15, I realized that I had some come in today that should have come on the 15th as well. It makes me look bad as a business owner when I don't respond right away. I know you guys realize how much you've screwed up, but the issue is that you keep screwing up. It keeps dragging on and on and on with no actual warning. I had started a new subject in this forum a few days ago because I couldn't access my email. It turns out it was down for maintenance. Every other website I have ever used that goes down for maintenance, has a warning on their site. You guys didn't have one at all, so I had no idea why I couldn't access my account. I have no idea why batches of emails keep getting massively delayed. I have never had this happen with any other email account I've ever had. I don't understand why it's happening now. I truly hope you hire someone that understands email accounts before you lose ALL of your clients. I will be finding a new provider this weekend this I can no longer rely on this service. (Yes, I realize this is not your personal fault and feel bad that you have to deal with all of us that are really upset. Our businesses are our lives and it's extremely frustrating to lose contact with your clients. But I hope you are passing all of this anger on to the people in charge.)

We understand the frustration. We are working with our management team to improve the communication that you are referring to.

The issue on the 15th was a result of a firewall adjustment. Some emails were placed in a deferred queue and were stuck there rather than clearing when available. They released yesterday.

We also understand you have to do what is right for your business. Many of us also run online businesses, so we do know what you are going through. The major systems migrations that are still underway as a result of the sale of Homestead from Intuit are nearing completion. We do everything we can to minimize impact, but it is very difficult to anticipate every possible situation when moving the systems we have.

We do apologize and would be sorry to see you go. We have some great things coming throughout the next year and beyond and are excited to get back to it.

You know, I can understand that sometimes there are malfunctions and setbacks. It happens to everyone and every business.
What is difficult to believe is that a company like Intuit, a respected name in the computer business would let a little thing like email service ruin the reputation of Homestead, a small company that used to provide outstanding service.
My email still does not work properly, not as fast as it used to. I now waste minutes waiting for commands to take effect.

Intuit is no longer involved with us. Some of the problems are a result of removing ourselves from their systems. Such massive undertakings are difficult at best. We are nearing completion and hope to soon start showing you some great new things.

As for slowness, are you referring to something happening with mail sent or received right now? It should not be taking a long time now.

I too have had many problems with my email accounts, however lately I have been getting a lit of spam emails and even with setting up filters, the same annoying emails keep coming. I am very annoyed with this and getting to the point where I just want to delete my email account and move on to something else.

Hi Peter1354, Sorry for the poor experience. I know the last few weeks have been very frustrating. We have had quite a challenge on our end with installing some new servers and doing an overhaul on the spam filter. The installation of the new equipment has been done for some time now and just last week they made some major progress with the installation and adjustments of the new spam filter. We saw a significant decrease in spam on the servers (reduced total traffic by about 50%) which is a huge success. Monitoring spam and adjusting the filters is an ongoing issue. Going forward you should notice significant improvement.

When I click on a received email, it takes a few seconds for it to open.
When I go to reply to an email, it takes a few seconds for a reply screen to open. When I want to include an attachment, it takes a few seconds for search screen to open and sometimes after waiting to load an attachment, I get a notification that I can not add an attachment.
When I press the "send" command, it takes a few seconds for the email to go.
As you can see, all that waiting amounts to the system not working properly.

Hi Jeffrey8583, I read the notes on your account and it sounds like you've been getting lots of bounce messages. However, this should not happen 100% of the time. Are the bounce messages all the same? We actually have most of the blacklists cleared up on our end.

I also see you have several email addresses. Is this problem with all of them, or just a specific one? Which one(s)?

It does indeed sound like it's associated with the new spam filter and not a blacklist. We will follow up on this again for you and try to get it resolved as quickly as possible.

So everything seemed to be better and working but now this morning I am unable to receive emails again. Not getting any message it's just they have not been delivered. Unless it's back to being very slow and maybe I'll get them at some point? Things are obviously NOT resolved fully.

What is going on with all the spam? I have never had much spam come through to my business email, but now it's mostly spam. TONS of stuff about russian brides, affair websites and 50+ single's sites. Is this is a Homestead problem in general or something that only I am dealing with?

This has been an incredibly disappointing experience. I have been with homestead for years, and am now looking at moving to a new website and email provider. Things have really done downhill since the company was bought out, and this event is the highlight. No backup on these servers,,,,what were you thinking??? Now,,, the spam issue is ridiculous. I am getting more spam than I have in years. I am using AVG to protect my computer, have had to implement their spam filtering, but because it is less than perfect, I still have to review these emails to make sure it hasn't captured something important. Way to go Homestead. I am paying premium buck for horrible service, which includes the push to move me to the online software to build my websites. THAT is NOT going to happen, so quit pushing!

We do understand your frustration, the spam issue should be improving rapidly since the new filter has been installed. It takes some time to completely configure it.

I am afraid that most every service is moving to online software. We are trying to make sure the desktop version continues to work, but operating system changes might make that impossible,

My email had been, as far as I know, working fine for about a week. Last night someone I email a few times a week got a bounce back email when he tried to reply to my email. I asked him to foward me the bounce back message which he did and I still haven't received it. Like I said we email back and forth several times a week and he was actually one of the people that was able to get emails through when most people couldn't so why is he having a problem now??

Is this the spam blocker you are using now? He is able to email other people without a problem. Between that and the fact that everyone else seems to still have an issue with spam and emails it sounds like it something on homesteads end not his email provider? He's been emailing me all day on the gmail account that I had to set up to decrease the amount of business I'm losing with all of the email problems that seem to still be unresolved.

We have no affiliation with Spamcop. There are many many companies that provide spam filtering services across the internet. In fact, when I checked the ip address in the error code, I found that that i was blacklisted by three spam filters. The sender will not always get a bounce, it will depend on who that person is trying to email.

I'm frustrated. I, like many others, use the homestead email as a crucial part of our daily routines and contacts. We email invoices, estimates, purchase orders and much more. I keep having my emails kicked back to me. Sometimes it will let emails go through and sometimes it won't. It's almost like it picks & chooses who to send them to.
