Search Engine Optimization is a complex and time consuming process. It is also fluid. The search engines are constantly tuning their systems to improve results. This can positively or negatively affect your rankings if you don't keep up on changes and adjust your strategies.

There are several factors that lead to increasing your website's ranking online and in return increasing your traffic. Below are a few things you can do to help improve your site's web presence.

On-Page

1. Appearance: Keep your site simple, easy to navigate, get rid of anything that does not add value. Compare your site to some of your competitors. Your website will be the first impression of your business for many people. If it doesn't look better than your competitors, you'll lose oppurtunities.

2. Traffic: For a novice, the easiest way to start getting traffic to your site is to just write good content. Think of your website as a book, with each page being a different chapter with different content. Write at least 200 or 300 words of text on each page. When a search engine crawls your website, it is trying to determine which keywords are most relevant for each one of your pages. For this reason it's important that you use industry specific keywords and phrases throughout your website to show search engines that you are knowledgeable in your field. Never ever copy/paste content from another source. You want original and personalized content.

3. Call to action. Decide what the #1 most important goal of your website is, and make it the easiest to find on the site. Remove any obstacles that make it hard for your customers to do business with you. If you are selling a product or service, make it easy to find the shopping page or add to cart button. Always have a simple way for your customers to contact you(phone, email address, or contact us form)

Off-Page

1. Not only do you want keywords within your website, but you also want other websites online linking back to you with those same keywords. Creating backlinks is similar to getting 'votes' for your site. The more votes you get, the more trusted your website is and thus the higher you will rank. Submitting your website to directories, article sites, blogs, forums, etc...are great ways to create links back to your website.

Social Media

1. A great way to increase traffic is to talk about your business in social networks. Websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and craigslist are all great avenues to help market your website to the public. Offer (appropriate)humor, how to guides, polls, and promotions to get people to talk about your business and build an online community that you can engage with.

When you can tie all 3 of these together, you are setting yourself up for the best possible chance at ranking higher and increasing traffic.

You will want to begin your SEO by making sure you are submitted to Search Engines. Search "submit my site to (search engine)" There are also hundreds of online directories that will accept submissions and add backlinks to your site.

Here are some 3rd party tools you can take advantage of as well. Keep in mind we can't offer support for these tools.

How do I get my website to pop up when my business is searched?.

When I search the web for my website name, a listing for it doesn't come up at all. What SEO tools are available within Homestead's do it yourself website program? Or are there methods I should be aware of that will help the website name rank higher in a search?

HI glccmanager8117,   Take a look at the information on this page. SEO can be quite complicated and time consuming but I highly recommend that you take a look at everything on this page and at least open up a Google webmaster account.

Hello, I'm seeing help topics in this forum re: increasing search rankings, but not getting found in the rankings to begin with. I am having a similar problem as @glccmanager8117... my site is not coming up at all in the search engines. I have submitted a sitemap to google webmaster tools and fetched as google. My webmaster tools account shows that my site has been crawled with no errors and has not been blocked. I'm not sure that this is solely an SEO issue because the site does not come up even with very specific search terms. Could there be something else inhibiting the search engine from showing our site in any search results at all? Thanks for any thoughts...

Every hosting company I have ever used has a sub domain URL like this.  Google usually figures it out easily.  You did the sitemap with the domain name?  Try doing another sitemap on the domain and upload it.  It is supposed to tell search engines the preferred URL structure.

Yes, it was added as mycompany.com/sitemap.xml. When you say try doing another... should I delete the current one in my site's file manager and add a new one?

Yes.  It is a good thing to do once in a while.  The more the site changes, the more often you should do it.  Not daily, but monthly isn't bad.

Search engines don't automatically find you. You may want to start by opening a Google Webmaster Tools account. You can then get them to index your site.

Landscape,Lawn care services Then repeat in the beginnning of the description, and key words. Then write the first sentence on the page with these words as well. This optimization is the way to do it. You may be the first one found with the key words that you use in all areas.

It takes time to build rankings. You have 21 of 30 pages indexed with Google, but since the site is very new, it may be many pages down in the ranking.

My competitor shows up on Google, but I don't. I've placed key words all over my site (indoor advertising Wisconsin) (restroom advertising Wisconsin) etc. Thanks

Why is it that my site on homestead has no meta tags?? I have been paying for years to use Homestead and when I search for persian kittens for sale in georgia NOTHING comes up. You cannot find my site unless you type in Castleglen Persians or Castelglen Cattery. It has caused me to lose sales over 10 or more years. I would appreciate an answer to this ASAP!

This is a very basic start to improving your ranking. Search engines don't pay attention to meta keywords any longer. They look for the keywords on your site.

First, Your website does not have a domain name pointed to it. If you use a
domain, then it is forwarded, not pointed. This hurts your ranking. It also hurts if you do not use a domain.
