All of the other pages have the header with the links, but somehow the home page has dropped it, hidden it? not sure, makes the site un-useable for the other pages. I can't figure out how to replace it

Which site are you working on. It sounds like you may have turned off the master page on the page settings.

adobegoldcanyon.org  and I found where under backgrounds and links, that somehow the option for all pages had been changed to just this page.  So when I rechecked that, it came back.  how do I check to make sure of the master page settings.

The setting is by individual page. To see what is on the master page you can click the master button.

To see if the master is turned on, you just have to look, but I have never seen it flip for no reason, so I am guessing it was an accidental click
