Has anyone switched to the New Blogging feature in BigCommerce? or Is there any information available about it?

I would like to see it in action before switching (to be certain I like the features and it fits our needs). I have already started some News Items and do not want to loose the changes/additions already made. I have searched BC but could not find anything about it at all.

Thanks for any input.

Hi Sally, I'm double checking to be sure but I think the Blog feature is not available in our version. I'll see what I can find out but you may want to take a look at Blogger. https://support.bigcommerce.com/quest...

Hey Mike -

I do appreciate you looking into it. My Admin Header has a message:

"Blogging is here!
Switch from News items to Blog to get sharing, comments, unified design and more."

Would they be posting on our Admin Pages for things we do not have access to? If so....shame, shame....I have spent too much time trying to find out about it. (and did not want to switch or add new 'News Items' till I understood what was happening (no point in doubling up work).

Since my original post here, I did finally find the following Help Doc at BC:
https://support.bigcommerce.com/quest...+

(must be very new as it has no votes! :) )

Thanks for looking into it!

No I did not find an 'off switch' - I will try clearing cache because I still see it. They converted News Items to blog and I definitely DO NOT want a full 'AddThis' button. Yes, my 'Blog' is listed under Web Content - but I am wondering if somehow it needs to be created/linked under 'Pages'. Let me clear cache and get back to you.

Well, I cleared cache and I still see it.

Ok, I am sorry, I was on your website. I see recent updates at the bottom of the store homepage. but no Addthis button. Can you take a screen shot?

OK...so today I noticed BC switched us to Blog (without notification like the rep told me on the phone - just a couple of days ago). Furthermore unless I am missing something, I do not feel this integrates with the website better than News as currently when viewing the Blog Page I no longer see the left side menus?

I am getting a bit tired of the 'surprises'.

Blog shows as 'Recent Updates' on bottom of Home Page (as it was set up for the News Updates)

When an article is clicked, it shows breadcrumbs Home > Blog > (article title).

Click on 'Blog' in the breadcrumb and it shows Page not available!

I disabled 'share buttons' in Admin but entire 'Add This' Share button is there! - This MUST go and I cannot find where to do that?

Also by disabling 'share buttons' for this Blog, it disables them for all products etc! (but the 'AddThis' button still on the Blog)

In the BC Help Docs it appears the Blog in managed under Pages but I cannot see this listed - Are we supposed to setup a 'Web Page'?

I did have the Pinterest, FB & Twitter enabled for Product Pages (which I DO want) but I have since disabled everything in Store Settings > Share and still have this 'crap' on these pages.

Did you click on a news item/blog post to bring up the full page? Notice the breadcrumb Home > Blog > (article name) - click on Blog and it says the page isn't available? Obviously I need to do something about that but not sure what.

Ha Ha....I toggled the Settings to turn Blog visibility 'off' and now when to click 'blog' in the breadcrumbs it's there. - but I still cannot get rid of the 'share' and quite confident the Blog is supposed to be a link somewhere.

I had News Items set to RSS feed and have since turned that off until I can get this straightened - (I think it only showed so many posts on the home page (but cannot remember how that was set.)

I am going to look at the new feature as soon as I can Sally. Try turning all social media off and see if the share button disappears. If it does, then we know it is tied to having any social buttons at all. If it doesn't then we might be able to find it in the code.

I have turned it all off (hence, I lost it on the Product Pages - boohoo), but it is still on these Blog Posts/News Items (I gather you saw that I made the Blog 'not visible' which made it more visible.)

I saw you said that. I am still trying to get a look at it. I am going to play with it on my test store.

Drew -

FYI - I also played with it today and under 'web pages' it suddenly showed up today. So I did make it visible and connected to the navigation.

You got me thinking about 'code' in your previous post and thought I would check html in the post itself (keeping my fingers crossed it was there) - no such luck and wow...the editor for Blog sucks (sorry for the language, could not think of another word).

So the 'Share' buttons are connected (somewhat) Share buttons on Products post properly. If you disengage the Share Buttons in Admin, the Blog Post only has the AddThis 'Share' button which isn't posting correctly. I engaged Pinterest (to test) and the preferred 'pin' was no image

Also, the RSS Feed does not seem to work (I was using the News Items as an 'update' feature for customers). I did a test Blog post and received an error in my RSS feed.

Sally, I found a possibility. This type of share can help your SEO by getting your content into the social networks, but if you want to remove it, try this.

Hey Drew -

Taking those two lines out 'sort of' worked perfectly. It did remove that HUGE obstructive 'AddThis' Share button but also removes any other singular share buttons that were used on the Product Pages (they are still on the product pages-no worry). It is just so odd for the 'AddThis' to be there AND the singular share - something is just not right about that.

Just a note - Prior to removing these, I noticed earlier today all the 'social buttons' on both the product pages and this blog were shifted to the left (yesterday they were aligned to the right).

Everyday seems to be a new mystery.

Hello Drew -

Thank you for locating that for me - I will take a look (crazy week/weekend). I do realize social media is supposed to be a good thing (lol sometimes not so 'social' ... :)

Anyway, I was surprised at the different format as I believe BC is using a customized AddThis button on all the other pages throughout the site.

1 more question, if you don't mind? Do you know if we should be somehow putting our own account settings in here? BC did such a great job on the other 'share buttons' - all customized to our Store Names (perfect - better than I did on my own in the past...lol) - but I guess that would be just taking this code out and placing the other buttons on....da...just thinking out load (trying to catch up on e-mails while watching the Beatles :)

Thanks again for your help!

Sally

oops...2nd question - do you know if The Blog will be tied to the RSS (like the News Items were?)

HI Sally I've done some research on this and it seems that for new sites that add the blog, there automatically appears an RSS Syndication link at the bottom of the home page. However your site does not have this but it looks like you are using the News page. Also, your site had some custom work on it so it could be different. I'll be happy to research more on this but it might be the most efficient if you call the number on this page: https://community.homestead.com/homes...

Just reply back here if you'd rather have me look into this.

Hey Drew -

Thanks again for the snapshot above - I finally had a chance to do it and it worked fine. (kept a snapshot and code just in case I wanted to put it back!) :)

Prior to removing the code, I noticed a change in behavior of the buttons on both product pages and Blog pages - the 'AddThis' and additional buttons were moved to the far left (from the far right). Buttons on Product Pages are also slightly smaller in addition to the left side switch (looks silly).

I have searched BC for customizing the info on these buttons (but some of the posts are either older format or 'not for our version' (I'm guessing). I would really like to have it back the way it was (I even thought of using the comparison panel in 'Design' but not sure what template/html file it would be.

If you can direct me further, that would be great!

Just so I am looking for the right thing. You want to know if/where the Addthis button can be customized? Both position and button? Currently you have removed this button from the pages. Am I correct?

I only removed it from the Blog - share buttons remain on product pages - but prior to me even removing the code for the blog as posted above - all the share buttons have become slightly smaller and moved to the far right. Just another small 'nuance' that keeps popping up and changing the site.
