I'm planning to redesign my current website using Websitebuilder. I have to start from scratch, i guess, but when it's all done, i would want the new site to have the old sites domain and address rather than the address i've had to give it for now.

example:
Current old active site: mycompany.net
New site: mycompany2.homesteadcloud.com

how would i swap the two?
would i be able to salvage the old site, even if under another name, as a short-term backup in case the new site breaks?

You may leave the old site as is while you build the new Homesteadcloud site. Once done, on the domains tab, there is a link called Change site association. This allows you to easily move the domain from the old site to the new. Making the change does update the DNS for the new site and the association also needs some time, so the complete switch could take up to 24 hours.

Also, where possible give the pages the same names, so that search engines have less to update.
