Is there an advantage to getting an ssl certificate from GoDaddy, or any domain host? They say it increases security and google ranking. True, or just a sales pitch.

Homestead does not support individual SSL certificates. If you are selling we have a shared certificate for checkout pages, or you would be using Paypal's shared certificate. Other than that it really isn't important at this point. Google does favor a secured site, but it is very tiny. Google says fewer than 1% of sites are affected and it is typically larger sites. Furthermore any increase in ranking for SSL could be offset by the increase in page load time, as encrypting everything will require extra time.Page load time is another ranking factor, so a gain in one spot, could cause a loss in another.
