Can you provide a description of your business?
My business is a medical family practice, providing quality affordable healthcare to the general community in a fairly large semi-rural town in South Africa. As a family medicine specialist I provide primary healthcare and secondary level care, including some specialized care such as ultrasonography and obstetric services.
How did you get started in this business?
As a medical doctor I had to go the obvious route of obtaining the appropriate qualifications and registration.However, my journey started out already as a learner at grade 8. My dream was always to serve my community where I was born and grew up. My passion for people and the desire to provide the ordinary man in the street with access to a quality service drove me to become a physician. I am living my dream and is very happy.
How do you market your business?
A business like mine is largely marketed by my clients through word of mouth and referrals. I do however place a large premium on a presence on the world-wide web and social media.
How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted how you conduct business?
A successful medical practice cannot function properly without technology. Not only do we use a lot of technology in medical equipment and administration, but I run a semi-paperless operation,making use of an electronic health system, referrals by e-mails and electronic prescriptions and claims submission. Furthermore the internet is a daily resource used in research, study and peer reviews. Medical journals and textbooks are downloaded in e-format. A fast internet connection and secure intra-net is the backbone of my business.
How important is social media to your business?
Social media such as Facebook is a vital part of my practice. Information is shared via my personal and practice pages and clients contact me via Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and SMS on a daily basis.
