When I am adding text to my web page and I try to use these punctuation marks ( " ~ ' ) etc., I get odd looking symbols that don't show up on any other program I use. It only happens in my site builder. So, I always have to go into another program, type what I want, then copy and paste it into my text box. It's getting old and I'm getting frustrated.

Hi Carl,

Welcome to the Community!

Sorry to hear of your frustrations. Are you using the desktop version or the online sitebuilder "lite" version? The punctuations shouldn't be be changing to symbols. Also are you seeing this in edit mode or on your live site after publishing?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris, Thanks for your reply. I'm using the full desktop version and It happens as I am editing my site, before publishing. It does not happen in any other programs I run in my PC, only sitebuilder. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the response. Once other question so I can pass this along to our dev team to investigate. Are you using your keyboard and typing in the ~ right into the text box or copying the ~ from another program like word?

Thanks,

Chris

Yes I'm typing in the text box and they do not work. I actually get a chinese like symbol for one and others that I can't identify, such as these, ( 繾 ✧ ∢ ) The first one is the tilda, 2nd is the Apostrophe and the 3rd is the Quotation Mark.

Now, we also had to update our passwords and when I open my program to work on my site, the password won't work unless I type it elsewhere, copy and paste it. If I don't do this, I can't open my sitebuilder program. Since I now use one or more of these symbols in my new password. When I log onto this site, however, my password works just fine. This isn't a new problem either, it has been like this since I've had my program. I'm just fed up with it and I'm sure you can understand. Thanks for your time.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the response. It sounds like there is some form of AutoFormat on your computer that is converting these symbols. I found a post that is very similar to the problem your having. It appears a setting in Microsoft Word is causing this.

http://dianev.com/blog/2007/12/08/mic...

Depending what version of Microsoft you have, do a google search for "turn off smart quotes in word 20...

Here is one site for 2003 and 2007

Please let me know if this fixes the issue.

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Chris,

However, I do not have any Microsoft office products such as "word" in my PC. Would this still make a difference. I do run open office and Adobe products such as Premiere pro, After Effects, Photo Shop, etc... I also use a editing keyboard ( Bella Pro series 3.0) could this be causing the issue? The only program I have this issue with is sitebuilder. Thanks.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the reply. I don't believe it is any Adobe product causing this. However I did see a forum that talks about Open Office creating weird characters. Please take a look at the below thread. They recommend de-activate the rich quote 1) You de-activate the rich quote (from the top of my head: Tools > AutoCorrect > Uncheck the "Use smart quote" checkbox);

Okay, now, my sitebuilder won't even launch!! I've already posted this on another page. I used it Friday to work on my website and saturday it wouldn't launch. I've tried restarting my PC several times and nothing works. I have not even published this site yet and I've put well over 100 hours into building and populating it with content and now I don't know if it even exists! I have a day job and I try to focus on bulding my site every day before work. However, I try to utilize the long holiday weekends (such as this weekend, MLK) to working on my site. Now, I'm dead in the water and no site to work on. Any ideas what could be wrong? This is all I see when I try to star t sitebuilder:

Hi Carl,

Sorry again for all the headache. After reading many forums, most mention it has something to with a word editor program on a computer (such as Open Office). Do you by chance have the installation cd for that software? If so you could try uninstalling Open Office to see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks!

Okay now, I've done everything.

I've reinstalled site builder, I've uninstalled open office.org, and still I can't use punctuation marks such as "quotation" marks or apostrophes such what you'd see in the words don't or didn't. I did, however, notice that if I typed the word "don't" or "did't" without punctuation, and I click on spell check, it would correct the word for me and place the proper punctuation. But that would not be the case for all punctuated words. This is only one of the few problems I've been having with this program and ONLY this program.
I'd probably stop thinking other programs are the issue by now and get your programmers to do their job and start fixing the bugs. I've got a lot of time in my site and plenty of frustration to go with it but I've put up with it for some time now. Here are some other issues I have, that I've yet to complain about.

Sitebuilder freezes and doesn't allow me to save work, create text or add objects. I have to force it to shut down, lose my work and start the program over again. Lucky for me, I save frequently.

I can't use keyboard shortcuts ( Ctrl-C, copy and Ctrl-V, paste) when I start sitebuilder but suddenly, they start working after some time and I don't know why.

Undo doesn't work all the time, drop down or keyboard shortcut.

I have a custom built editing PC and I run mostly Adobe editing software and other high end software and I've not once, run into these issues with anything.

I am an extremely patient person, however, this can only work for so long.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I think I may have pin pointed the crash occurrence, since it happened three times today. The crash seems to happen when I am updating the meta tags in the description box. Hope this helps your programmers figure it out.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the reply and trying the option of uninstalling and reinstalling. I've passed all your information over to our product and dev team to investigate, but they are struggling to figure out what could be causing this issue as they can't reproduce it. They aren't sure if it's a program causing it or something between the text you are typing and the conversion into the element.

I know this isn't ideal, but they did want to check if you could try the Sitebuilder Plus platform to see if you get the same issues. When you login to your account, please click Websites Manager on the left and then the down arrow next to Edit Site. Here you will see an option to run the Plus version.

Thanks!

Hi Chris, thanks for your help. I will try sitebuilder plus on your site and get back to you. I did mention the crash when copying and pasting from one "meta tag" box to another in another page. I haven't tried it since, I'm afraid to. Thanks again.

I tried sitebuilder plus and everything worked just fine so, now what? By the way I actually love the format of sitebuilder plus. Why don't my program work the way sitebuilder plus does? Also, can I log in and work on my website from another PC anywhere? That would be a huge help since I'm out and about a lot. Thanks for your help.

Hi Carl,

That is great news that the plus version is working for you. I'm still not sure the root cause of the desktop version (past this info on to the dev team).

You can absolutely work on your site from any computer using the Sitebuilder Plus program.

Thanks!

Hi Carl,

My guess is that the online version is still updating from the desktop version. I've seen this issue before and all it takes is refreshing your files.

I went ahead and refreshed them so please try again. You can also view this posts which will help solve this if it happens again.

I've got the same issue with weird characters showing up in the blog. This is only in the published version. I see nothing on the Websites Manager about Sitebuilder Plus. Is this the new name for the old Sitebuilder I have installed on my computer?

I run windows 7, and I downloaded Site Builder to this computer when I got it over a year ago. I've had an account w/Homestead for many years, and every time I get a new computer I download a new site builder. I haven't used my account in some time, tho. Might I need to go ahead and reload SB even though it's always been windows 7 on this machine?

As this is a new blog, I wonder if I'd be better off to just use WordPress and an RSS feed?

Hi Trudy,

Thanks for posting.

The Sitebuilder Plus version is a newer online editing software. It's very similar to the desktop version, but it is hosted online. Two of the main reasons for this was for Mac users as well as giving one the ability to edit their site from any computer without having to install software. However, I'd recommend sticking with the desktop version since you are used to it.

As far as the blog, I'm not sure why weird characters are showing up. Could you please respond with what symbol you were trying to make and what symbol appeared?

Because it is a new blog, I would recommend blogger or wordpress. They've been around for 10+ years and solely focus on blogs. For that reason they have a lot more features available.

Could you please clarify what isn't loading.

Thanks!

Chris
