I have an insistent client that claims she could once view the following page without the ".html" at the end.  Did something change in Homestead that would make the following url not work without adding the ".html" at the end?
http://www.gcsct.org/imagine.html

She claims http://www.gcsct.org/imagine
worked before and now it does not. She printed all her marketing materials like that and is insistent something changed.  Can this url be pointed to http://www.gcsct.org/imagine.html?
Any help, is appreciated!

Hey Patty........... I have used HS since 06 & pretty versed I can tell you I have never seen a published page without the .HTML extension on the end .. The page she refers to is actually showing the SITE ERROR PAGE ( which means it either does not exist or that it had been deleted )

I looked at the main site , where is the page located from which drop down ?

If helpful I ALWAYS create and customized my site error pages to reflect the index page so that when people arrive they are not confused ..

Hope that helps

UPDATE I found it.... I think she may be mistaken or perhaps when she printed it left off the extension ?? I would CUSTOMIZE the site error page & you can either duplicate the INDEX PAGE or the IMAGINE PAGE ..

Great idea!  I thought I had a site error page for that site, I will go check now. I'm pretty sure she just left it off in her marketing materials and now looking to blame me, (after she wishes me a Merry Christmas!) They keep asking me if I can point gcsct.org/imagine to gcsct.org/imagine.html and I keep explaining I don't think it works that way.  Big ugh.

Drew, can you pipe in?
Many thanks!

I use a third part product called Easy Menu Maker. http://www.easymenumaker.com/
You have to pay for it, but it was worked well for me so far and intuitive. After you make your menu, you cut and paste code into an html element on every page in the exact coordinates. Downside is if/when you change the menu, you have to change it on every page. Also, you have to remember to bring the element forward, otherwise it gets tucked underneath other elements on your pages.

There are a bunch of programs out there to build drop down menus. Like Goldilocks, this one was just right for me!

patti2506,

Victoria6733 is correct. The only way that worked was with the siteerror404.html. We have always required the extension. I am looking in to why the page is not displaying. It might have something to do with the data center migration that we are a short ways from finishing.

I would try to resave the Site error page & republish ??   BC for what ever reason it's reverting to the standard homestead one when you select a page that doesn't exist http://www.gcsct.org/test/        Hope that helps :)  OR To make the client happy replace the site error page as a duplicate of gcsct.org/imagine

Drew and V -
Thanks for checking in and Drew, thanks for looking into that. If We can get the seiteerror404 page to display, then I will make it a copy of the imagine page for the cranky customer. Great idea, V!

I did make a copy of the imagine page and saved it as siteerror404. Still comes up with this static homestead page.  Must be on their end. Same thing on three other Homestead sites. Drew, can they fix this?

Many thanks!

Drew - can you give me an update on getting the siteerror404 pages to start working again?  They do not appear for any homestead site.
Many thanks!

Sorry. I am requesting an update now. The migration, while mostly complete, still has a few things to work on. I'll post as soon as I can.

patti2506,

Unfortunately, it looks like they have to complete the migration before they can address this, so it will likely be after the New Year. I am sorry for the news.

Hello - I am having the same problem on my Homestead web site - my customized Site Error 404 page used to appear when a user typed an incorrect URL within my domain, but now users are going to a Homestead advertising page instead. When will this be corrected? It looks very unprofessional. Thank you.

Yes, this is happening on ALL my Homestead websites. It needs to be corrected but I can't get through to a human on the support line and they shut down chat.
Can anyone officially report this problem and get it fixed?? Very unprofessional and now, unhappy clients.

Unfortunately, I understand how you are trying to use the page, but that is not the design of the site error 404 page. This will be fixed, but there are issues ahead of it in priority.

Can you clarify , what do you mean by "not the design of the site error page" THANKS

The desired outcome was to be able to advertise a link that went to http://www.domainnae/page. Page would not have .html. This would generate a site error 404, so if you design that page to be a content page, that would work, but it is not the designed use for the page.

That wasn't my issue. Maybe I'm not following this right. I would like MY site error 404 page, that I design, to appear when a user types in an invalid address, not the Homestead sales like page found here. http://www.greenwichcatholicschool.org/imagine/

patti2506,

You were going to have content on the page, correct? or was it just a customized error page? From the original description and post, your client was printing material for distribution with the URL http://www.greenwichcatholicschool.org/imagine/ or something similar. This has never worked on Homestead, unless you were trying to send people to the siteerror404 page

Drew - you are awesome. I have a site error 404 page and I was going to copy another page on the website, call it the site error page,so if people type in the wrong url (without the .html), it would go to the site error page, but the site error page would look just like the page I want them to find!  Get it?!  Right now, Homestead has blocked ALL of our site error 404 pages to it goes to some generic Homestead page. Yuck and thanks!

The siteerror404.html function still does not work for my sites when a broken link is clicked or entered. It goes to homestead.com. This has been for 2 months at least!

I am sorry for this, but the engineers are working as quickly as possible on all the items that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, since ideally, 404 errors should not be seen, or addressed quickly this is a lower priority than some other things. I know some of you have obviously legitimate concerns, but there isn't much I can do. If you know of a page that causes this error, you can create a blank page with just an HTML redirect to take you to any page desired. This may help some of you.

Drew - thanks for the update. 7 years ago, (for me anyway), people have requested the functionality of drop down menus.  Perhaps people even inquired earlier. We were told that they are working on it.  Still,...nothing. So I will not hold my breathe on this one.  Thank you for your continued communique. You should be the CEO. :)

Haha! Thanks patti2506

I am sorry. Intuit really stopped everything in terms of development, and even though our new company does want to begin enhancing our products and services, there are many back end changes that need to be made first. We are still making these changes. I don't know all the details of what is left to do, but we are now part of a company that is dedicated to web services, so I feel confident that improvements in these areas that you can see will occur. I just don't know when at this point.
