The second Monday of February(11th) is National Clean Out Your Computer Day.

Most of us keep a computer for several years before replacing it. Over that period of time, your computer can become clogged with old files and applications. This can slow down your computer a great deal. It can also lead to some confusion as to what and where everything may be stored. So make some time to clean it up. Here are a few things you can do.

  • Reorganize your files and folders so you know exactly where all your files are and where to place related new files.
  • Delete files you no longer need. They may be old or were just temporary, but either way, get rid of them.
  • You may find duplicate files in multiple folders. Keep the best one and delete the rest.
  • Uninstall applications that you no longer use. Even if you don't use them, these programs may grab your computer's resources anyway. Removing them can help free up those resources and make your computer work more efficiently.
  • Run a disk cleanup utility to delete old temporary files and empty your trash bin.
  • Run a disk defragmenting utility to allow the computer to reorganize the files on the disk. This can also speed up access time.
