My website only fills the screen on a smart phone if it's held sideways (landscape mode), but when held upright (portrait mode) it shrinks down and only fills about a third of the screen.

Sort of looks like you have not set it up to be mobile friendly. I think it is difficult to read in either vertical or horizontal on a phone.  If you are using SiteBuilder you can use DudaMobile to make it mobile friendly.  Duda Mobile kind of simplifies the layout but makes the links easier to see and reach.  You might want to consider switching it over to the icloud version on Homestead.  It is much nicer to your site in the mobile version and that is built in.  being mobile friendly has become a critical component for search engines these days.  Hope that helps.

It looks good on my phone. Do you still see an issue?
