I want to be to offer layaway option for my customers, with economy I think they would appreciate it. Only thing that I see that will allow me to offer payments is the subscription.

Is this the only option?

Welcome to the Community!

Unfortunately you are correct in that the only way to have a layaway option where they make monthly payments would be the subscription option. You could have a layaway category and let the customer choose how much they want to pay a month. Then when they checkout you could have a custom field that asks which product they were interested in.
