Nothing will change with the way you edit your site. If you transfer a domain, and then change the nameservers to point it back, it will work exactly the same way.

So if I switch to hostgator and I want to edit the site, will I have to transfer the domain back homestead?

You can transfer the domain to any company you choose. It won't change the way you edit the site. You'll still go to www.homestead.com and log into your account. Once logged in you go to the Websites Manager page and then click the blue Edit button.  Transferring the domain will have no effect on how you edit the website.

Is there a way to move my website to weebly and edit it there?

I'm sorry if "weebly" is some kind of SPAM

No. The Weebly software will not be capable of editing the site.

If I transfer my domain to another hosting service that supports php, can I install an SMF forum on my website?

No.. I think there is some confusion between your domain, and your website. They are two completely different things.  It doesn't matter which company hosts your domain. You can have the domain hosted at any company you wish, and have it pointed to your website.  The way you manage/edit your site will not change no matter what you do with the domain. As far as PHP goes, our system does not support PHP so I'm sorry that won't be an option that is available.
If you need further clarification please let us know and we'll do our best to help you out.

Yes. There are several ways to point a domain, but the easiest is to just change the nameservers. Here are the steps if you choose to do that; https://community.homestead.com/homes...
