I had a customer trying to put through a big order on bigcommerce and they ran into an error because they had two rims which are heavy and made the weight exceed 150 lbs is there a way to tell the system to ship them separately so we don't loose out on big orders in the future? I know i can set all products to ship separately but that would be ridiculous shipping costs. need to be able to set certain items that ship separate.

You can set a fixed shipping cost on that product. It will charge that rate per item ordered.

I saw that you could do that but there is a huge difference in shipping lets say to michigan where were located vs sending it to california

I thought of a way you can do this, but it still requires using a flat rate option. You can create multiple shipping zones and add each method to each zone. Then add a Ship by weight flat rate to each zone. You can create rules that start at orders over 150lbs, and less than whatever you specify will cost $x. Then you can continue to make rules to cover up to any weight you wish. I know this is a bit more setup, but if you are using UPS then I believe they have 7 zones.

Do you think you can make that work?

We set our shipping so that anything over 50 lbs. will be quoted and the customer can be contacted. That way we can compare UPS Hundredweight and trucking options to get the customer the best deal.

I noticed there is a new on off switch when in a product that says Special Handling Required but the "info" or "I" next to it says for items that won't fit in cardboard etc. but how does it work? what happens when i turn it on?

Sorry Jill1739, Can you clarify... are you referring to something on the live site, or in the store administration screens?

Can you let me know one of the products that has this or if possible include a screenshot of what you are seeing?

Thanks!
Mike

In store administration in all products when you are adding or changing product information. Its right under product description.

Hi Jill 1739, If you hover your mouse over the "i" it gives you a description of what the setting is for. You can turn it on and look at it without hurting anything. You would typically enable that setting if you had some sort of large, or odd sized product that does not fit in a standard shipping container and where it might be necessary to charge additional shipping fees.
