Ship by weight tables are an excellent way to have incremental shipping costs dependent on the size of the order.

1. Go to Setup & Tools › Set up your store › Shipping.

2. Click Edit or Set up shipping charges for the country/zone you are setting up shipping for.

3. Toggle On the toggle switch next to the Ship By method.

4. You will see a pop-up labeled Ship by Weight or Order Total Options. Choose your options:

  • Display name - the name of the shipping charge at checkout (e.g. Ship by Weight)
  • Charge shipping - select by weight
  • Default shipping cost - the charge for anything that falls outside of the weight ranges you specify below. Keep this blank if you want orders that fall outside of your specified weight ranges to default to a different shipping method.

5. Fill out the first weight range and its associated cost. If you need additional ranges, click the green plus (+) sign.

6. Continue to fill out your weight table. There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The lower value is inclusive, and the higher value is exclusive (X ≥ order weight < Y). So "From 1 lb up to 2 lbs" will cover orders that are 1 or 1.999 lbs, but not an order that is 2 lbs.
  • Any item that falls outside the ranges you specify here will be given the default shipping cost listed above. If none is specified, no ship-by-weight cost will display at checkout.
  • To avoid any gaps, when you create a new range, it will autopopulate the end of your last range. These values are editable.
  • Your last range must end in a number. If you need something like "10 lbs and higher is $30," you can enter the second value as an extremely high number (e.g. From 10 lbs up to 1000 lbs is $30). Alternatively, you can leave out this range and set $30 as your default shipping cost.
7. Save to complete the set up. You can always edit it later by clicking the Edit button.

Hi Drew,

Just like it was in ProStores, I would like to offer 3 service levels for shipping, Standard, Expedite and Express, and would like to charge for these based on the total order weight. I see that we can create tiers for the weight; how should I go about creating the service levels?

Thanks

I received your message and unfortunately when you have the store setup to calculate shipping by weight, then it does not give you other shipping options for overnight.  express, free shipping etc.  Therefore, you may have to combine shipping options or setup features at the product level. For example, if there are specific product you want to offer free shipping, you can designate that on each product.  Also, if you want to have express, or overnight shipping you can go ahead and set up Fedex, UPS etc. and use it just for the overnights etc.    Or if you need to allow for things like extra costs (insurance), then you can add a fixed shipping cost at the product level.

Based on what you described, it may be easiest to use the Fedex, USPS, or UPS calculators, and then make the necessary adjustments  for free shipping or additional shipping costs at the product level.

Thanks for your reply. As you say that "when you have the store setup to calculate shipping by weight, then it does not give you other shipping options for overnight.  express, free shipping etc.", so would those options be available if we choose to charge shipping by item or per order? Or, what would be the way to not charge by weight, and have the ability to give the option to the customer to select the level of service for shipping?

You'll have to activate one of the Shippers.  The system won't give you the option without.

Hi Ana1861,

This topic is for Storefront only.  It is not intended for Simplestore users.  The Simplestore you have can add a shipping charge to the individual product, or you can set up shipping through your Paypal account.  If you have further questions concerning this, please create a new topic.

Thanks

Drew

How do I get the shipping amount to total by the weight I put in the product description.  So for example if someone from the US buys a product and someone from Canada or other international places buy the same product, how do I get the shipping charge per weight to show correctly when the customer checks out.  I did a practice run of an order and put a canadian address to see what it did and the shipping shows as 0.  I obviously did something wrong.

I did add the zones for canada and I did another practice one and it still shows 0.  I have usps set up as the shipping method and the item is 7 lbs so it should show what the shipping should be for this product at 7 lbs but it's not

Do I need to put something in this area?  I have read the articles on it but they don't make any sense.

Ok, try again now to test it. The zone was only showing the US. I added Canada to that zone.

I fixed it and it's now letting me check out with a canadian address but it only gives the option to choose FedEx and I have USPS and FedEx  turned on for Canada so not sure why it won't allow USPS.

I can't see why either. Let me think on this a bit longer. If I don't get the solution, I'll check with Bigcommerce in the morning.
