Here are instructions to verify your website with Google Webmaster Tools:.

Note: Google requires a unique domain to verify your site (http://www.mybusiness.com). A domain like http://mybusiness.homestead.com won't be able to be verified. If you don't have a domain, first go to Registering a Domain.

Start in Google Webmaster Tools
  1. Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools

  2. Click ADD A SITE.

  3. Enter the website you'd like to verify. Then, click Continue.

  4. Select Alternate Methods.

  5. Choose the option Add a meta tag to your site's home page.

  6. Copy the meta tag listed. You must copy the code exactly. We highly recommend using copy/paste.

Back in your website

  1. Important: Go to your home (index) page.

  2. Then, click Page Settings. Select Advanced Settings.

  3. In the Add HTML or Javascript field, paste the code from Webmaster tools.

  4. Click Save. Then, click Publish. Select This Page when confirming what you'd like to save and publish.

  5. Back in Google Webmaster Central, click VERIFY.

Webmaster Central will confirm that your verification was successful.

Note: To stay verified, don't remove the HTML file or meta tag, even after verification succeeds.

Hope this helps!

ok, thank you so much. I did it this way yesterday and it didn't work, then moved to subfolders and still didn't work. I guess it was your help that put it into perspective, now off to Bing to see if that one worked, google all fixed.

what if I was verified before and i deleted my site to make a new one (same domain just new website) do i have to re-verify? Do i delete my old website on google and then re-verify my new site? Will this kill my ranking?

Hi Jerre,

Sorry for the delayed response. You will want to add the meta tag onto your new website. You can delete your current domain in webmaster tools an re-add it if you like to get the meta tag again. In no way will this effect your rankings.

Thanks,

Chris

I did delete the the site on webmaster tools and then I added it and the same site came back with no option to verify. It says it's verified but I never put the meta tag verification in

Hi Jerre,

That is bizarre. Usually Google will want to re-verify your account, but it sounds like they already know your the site owner. I recommend checking back once a month just to make sure Google doesn't try to re-authorize your account.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Tim,

I believe you have to open up a notepad file and add the one line of text they are asking for. You can then save the notepad as a .html file.

However, they should allow you to verify ownership by adding a meta tag (alternative method). It's much easier to do. If you find that option, open up the Sitebuilder, go to your homepage, click Page Settings in the top toolbar, go to advanced settings, and paste in the code.

Hope that helps!

Hi Greg,

Google should give you either a txt file or a CNAME file to add to your domain. If you could please reply with either, I'd be more than happy to add it to the backend of your domain.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Patrice,

Thanks for posting! It looks like you added the .html file to your advanced settings. Please go into Google and Choose the option "Add a meta tag to your site's home page". This will be found under the Alternate Methods tab. The one line of HTML code is what you will want to paste into the Advanced Settings.

Thanks1

Chris

Crazy..once you've followed all the directions you need to verify from the same page..Alternative page..mine switched back over to the main page and it didn't verify but once I clicked over to the Alternative page and clicked verify it went through. Good luck.

Thank you very much for this answer.. I tried everything and kept getting rejected and felt like I was losing it or something. I tried this 'Alternative Method" and it went straight thru. It did switch back over once I copied and when I returned to verify it didn't, I know dang it, but then I noticed it had switched back to the main page..so I clicked 'Alternative Method' and at bottom clicked verify and everything was a go.
Thank you very much..
I published my website (gravesfireprotection.com) on tuesday the 28th. It doesn't come up when I search for it. Can someone take a look at it for me and maybe advise me as to any changes I should make?

I published my website www.tourguidejames.com. All of the pages are showing correctly... but after doing a Google search, I noticed additional (and multiple) "Page Not Found" pages. They represent pages I no longer need.

Here is an example:

http://www.tourguidejames.com/Service...

How do I delete these so they no longer appear in Internet searches? I found advice through Google, but the tips seemed very complicated.

Thank you.

Hi nola4983,

You are right, when Google indexes pages that no longer exist, or have been renamed, visitors will get the page not found error. It can be a little difficult to get Google to remove those pages for you but, the good thing, is Google will likely drop them automatically after a period of time or after they index your site again.

I did take a look at your site and don't see any broken links at this time, so if you are not in a hurry, it will work itself out (perhaps in days or weeks, no guarantee), over time.

If you want to be more proactive, one of the best things you can do is sign up for a Google Webmaster account, create a sitemap and then get your site verified by Google. This can also be a bit daunting so we do offer service to set this up for you if you wish.

I would like to use the TXT or CNAME method because I am not yet ready to publish my site (I want to get Google apps up and running for email @ my domain). I am not sure how exactly to post the TXT info they have provided and would appreciate some guidance.

Thank you!

Hi dreampackgo7126,

If you would like to provide us the TXT record, we can add if from our end. You may have noticed, but the online Domain Manager screen will allow you to edit the Cnames, but won't let you add a TXT record, so we'll do it for you.

Feel free to post it here, or when you are logged in, click the Help button and then Live Chat button and give it to a Live Chat support agent.

If this post helps, please give a "Star" and complete this survey to rate my performance

Thanks!

do you have to verify each page of your website?
Photo of Mike F.

Mike F., Alum

  • 184,428 Points 100k badge 2x thumb
No. You are basically just verifying the domain name. Google spiders will crawl your site and index all the pages, but there are things you can do do make it more search engine friendly such as submitting sitemaps.
i did as above not working can someone look and help?

Can you go back to your verification and look for the tab that says alternate methods? Select Domain name provider. Go to the bottom of the dropdown and select Other. You will get a crazy string that starts with google-site-verification...

Copy and paste that into this thread and I will add it to your domain.

Thanks

Drew

In Storefront, if you go to the left hand menu and click on Store Design > Page Template Manager, and you'll see a list of all the templates for each page.

The home page will be the first one listed and if you need to put any code in the head section, you'll see another template named Header.

Thanks Mike so I am assuming I have to put the meta tag from google in the header. I did that but i'm now getting the following: "You are currently using a Build Your Own theme. If you make changes, you will not be able to use the Theme Builder."

Mike F., Alum

That is correct. If you don't plan on turning on the theme builder it won't affect you.

You can add the CNAME and/or TXT record yourself from the domains tab in your account. Click on Advanced DNS settings.

I don't know why the meta tag isn't working. If you have it posted correctly in the head section, then Google should be able to read it. It is always my preference to use the TXT or CNAME. Use other for the domain provider. If you pointed it using nameservers, you can edit the DNS as I said above. If not, then you will need to add the Google records at the domain host
