How can I switch my domain to a new site I built?

Here's how you can associate your domain with another website on your account.

  1. Click Domains link in the left navigation menu.

  2. Scroll down until you see your domain name and click Change Site Association.



  3. Choose the website you'd like your domain name to point to using the drop-down menu.


  4. Click Save to confirm the change. It may take some time for this change to reflect.

    **If the site you are switching to is built in Website Builder**

  5. Click Websites Manager, choose the site you are working with, click Edit Site, and Publish.

    *IF YOU GET A 404 ERROR on your published site, please follow the instructions in this article to fix this:

I have done this but when I type in my site address for my second domain on the firefox search bar, it stills goes to the first website. Everything says the second site has it's own domain name but alas, no. I have wiped all cookies and history from Firefox

Hi Lynne9443, If you tested it immediately after changing the site association, then it probably would not have worked at that time. It can take several minutes or even a couple of hours for the dns records to propagate. I just tested it and it seems to be working fine, but if you have any problems, let us know. Thanks!]

That was exactly the problem! I think you could adjust "several minutes" to "several hours" and make customers happier. I would not have been concerned if it had said that as I had given it quite a long time to post before trying to troubleshoot the situation.

The drop-down menu appears after you click the link shown in step #2. If it is not appearing, then for some reason your browser is not fulling loading the page. If it doesn't work, just reply here and tell us which domain you want associated with the other site.

I am also having the same problem as Melissa8817. I created a new website that I would like my existing domain to point to. Like her, I created a new sub domain but it's not coming up in the drop down box as a choice.

My website is www.buildingscienceinspection.com and I want it to point to www.buildingscienceinspections.net

You don't actually have any subdomains in your account at this time, but, if I understand you correctly, you are trying to point your ".com" address to the same site as the ".net:" address. This is a different scenario than above. For you, the easiest way to resolve this is to get the nameservers from the website hosting company and point the domain.

ok, they guided my through changing the A Records under the advanced DNS settings. They said it would take 24-48 hours to take effect. Are you saying I also need to change nameservers?

If you changed the A record, then you won't need to change the nameservers. If you change the nameservers then by default it changes all the dns records including the mx records which would affect any email addresses you have.

I followed these steps to change our website to the new version I made, but now when I try to go to my website, I get a 404 error.  The domain is registered elsewhere...could this be causing a problem?  The website is aecprinting.com and I am trying to point the domain to the aectestsite.homesteadcloud.com site I just finished building.  Please help!

I had an existing website and domain with Homestead. I registered a second domain and created a second website, but when I try to navigate to it, I end up back at my first website. Any ideas on how to fix that?

I have 6 domains that I intended to act as 6 seperate web sites. Currently when I update one with SiteBuilder all 6 sites are updating simultaneous. I need these to function as individual sites in order to market seperate brands and services.

You'll need to create a new website to go with the domain. To add a new one, simple log in and go to Websites Manager > Add New Website (in the upper right corner). Your website URL will be http://newwebsitename.homestead.com, but once you have a new site, you can follow the steps above go associate it with a domain

I have a domain name, but when I type it into my browser URL bar, it loads a landing page like the page doesn't exist. When I type in the mydomain.homestead.com URL, it loads my site. How do I get mydomain.com to go to my website? It's not available to select from the drop down list in the "Change Site Association" page.

Brian1384, If you don't see the link at the top-right, then scroll down and look for a link that says "Website Management Tools" and expand the link open. It will expose another menu with additional choices, where you'll find the link.

It appears the site in your account was created in 2008 as you mention above. I do see that both domains are associated with this same site. What is it that you want to change exactly?

I bought a new domain but homestead has pointed it to a different domain I already own. I did not ask that this be down. When I open the drop down list, my new domain is not listed. But it is listed on the amin menu as a domain I own. Is this a mistake on the part of Homestead or is there something I can do on my own to fix this. Just pointing my new web domain at itself is not an option as it does not appear in the drop down box. Thank you.

I am trying to do the same thing as this post.  My main URL/Website is LIVE and I want to publish a new website once I complete it. Yes.  Once you finish and publish the new site, then follow the instructions in this topic and change the site association.  Keep in mind in might take up to an hour from the time you switch to the time the new site comes up, so be a little patient.

I am guessing what you really mean is "how do I work on the site?" not the domain. If this is correct, you'll want to associate the domain with the website. Follow the steps in this thread. Then after you have the domain connected to the correct site it will show up in the drop-down menu on the Websites Manager page.

I recently dropped "domain A.com" in favor of "domain B.com," which was a subdomain of "domain A.com." When I go to "Change Site Association," I don't have "domain B.com" as an option. The closest I can come is "domain A.homestead.com." Also, my Site Stats are trying to show me "domain A.com" when this domain doesn't even exist anymore.

Hopefully, I'm being a tad bit more clear than mud, lol.

Sorry, I'll have to have you clarify using specific domain names. It sounds like you might be confusing Homestead sub-domains with your own sub-domains and is probably why you are not finding what you need.

Tell me which domain you are working on and what you want to do.

I had kingdomcavaliers.com for many years. I recently changed to cavaliersoftexas.com, which is directed to the exact same page as kingdomcavaliers.com. Then I dropped kingdomcavaliers.com. Still, when I go to "Change Site Association," hoping to find cavaliersoftexas.com, all I can find that comes close is kingdomcavaliers.homestead.com. Also, when I publish my web pages and choose to automatically view them after they're published, what comes up is kingdomcavaliers.com, which doesn't really exist anymore, resulting in a error page/homestead.com.

What you are seeing is a site name, which is different than a domain name. The site name is actually a subdomain of Homestead. You can change it from the Websites manager page. Just log into your account, go to Websites Manager, and click the "rename" link right next to the domain name.

I can see that you were logged in while you made this post. There will be no stats available if a site has not been published, or if it was created with other software and doesn't contain our tracking code. Which site are you unable to see the stats for?

Cavaliersoftexas.com is exactly the same web site as kingdomcavaliers.com. It's published. This one web site had both domains for awhile - both cavaliersoftexas.com AND kingdomcavaliers.com. I recently dropped the domain, kingdomcavaliers.com. Yet, when I publish my web pages and choose to view them automatically, I don't see my web pages, but rather, I get homestead.com. If one tries to go to kingdomcavaliers.com, what comes up is homestead.com since I dropped the kingdomcavaliers.com domain name. This entire situation is in reference to one web site, just different domain names.

When I go to the "rename" option on Websites Manager, the domain, "kingdomcavaliers.homestead.com" is not listed so I can't rename it. When I go to "Change Site Association" on the Domains link, the domain, "cavaliersoftexas.com" is not there. Does that make sense? Am I confused?

Sorry, I realize this is confusing. If a site has a domain name associated with it, you won't see the subdomain in the list. You'll have to choose the actual domain name (cavaliersoftexas.com), from the dropdown, and then click the rename link.

HEY! It just now started working properly! When I publish my pages I'm now taken to "cavalierkingcharles.org" which works fine. Perhaps I should have waited it out before getting concerned. (We're still talking about only 1 web site.)

...but I still don't have the option to change the name, "kingdomcavaliers.homestead.com." I find this odd, but as long as everything is working properly, I'm not going to complain.
