Official Response
Here's how to create another website.

  1. Click Websites Manager on the left.

  2. Click the Add New Website link near the top right of the page.

  3. Choose a name for your site and click Add this site.

Note: The number of sites you can create is determined by what type of account package you have.

Hope this helps,

I use the longer version of sitebuilder- the one you download. For me, I find under file (top left of the screen) at the bottom of the drop down menu, "switch sites" and from that a small window opens- in that window you can see where it says "start a new site." Does that help?

cintia7019, Your account is on the Starter plan. To create a 2nd site, you'll need an additional site upgrade which is $2 per month. Also, you are currently limited to 5 pages so depending on how many pages you need you can also get a 10 page upgrade which is also $2 per month. Just let us know if you want these added and we'll upgrade the account.

Hi Mike, I take the upgrate for $2. It's 5 pages each website? Then I don't need more. Please upgrade the account so I can start building the page. Let me know the total per month. Thanks

After you start the new site, then you'll want to re-associate the domain with the new site. https://community.homestead.com/homes...

You must first create the site. Currently your new domain is attached to leaveittokandie.com. Create the new site, then go to the domains tab and use the change site association link to move the new domain to the new site.

why am I not able to use the same name for my website as my domain name?  When creating an additional website it only lets me create a name with the ".homestead.com: when my domain name is just ".com".  My first account didn't add the homestead tag.

Lloyd R.0013,

First, you'll want to create the new site as shown in this thread. When doing so, you'll be prompted to create a site name, which is different than the actual domain name. The site name is actually a subdomain of homestead.com which is why you see "yoursitename.homestead.com".   Once you create the site and the site name, then, you'll want to register the new domian name.

How do I register a domain?

Let us know if you get stuck or need clarification.

If you pick a new template, it will wipe out everything on your site.
The best option is to create a second site with the new template as
shown here.

Your account does not limit the number of different websites you can build, but each additional domain will add $2/month or if you want domain privacy, $3/month to your account.

What if I have a domain with another host but want to point it to a second site, so I maintain two different sites? Is there a charge for this? AND what if I want to keep my paypal separate? One will be for a non-profit, so I need them separate.

If you point a domain hosted at another company, to a Homestead site, we do not charge for that. But obviously you will still need to pay the domain host their fees. Our SiteBuilder system will hold one PayPal email address per site, so for every site you start you could have each one connected to a different PayPal account. If you need to use two separate PayPal account son a single site, you can just use embed the html code provided by PayPal rather than using the buttons built into SiteBuilder

Use the steps above and just start a new site. This way you can browse through the templates, and even test them out without affecting your live site.

You'll want to start a 2nd site like shown above. Then, after you are done and want to move the domain to the new site, just click the Domains link on the left menu when you log in and on the Domain Manger page you'll see a link under your domain name to change the site association.

We want to change our website design. What is the process for creating a new site design and then seamlessly switching over our URL when the new design is completed. We do not want to lose the current site until ready for the changeover. Is there info posted somewhere that outlines the proceedure we should follow in a step by step format?

ONE DOMAIN OLD WEBSITE VS NEW REPLACEMENT SITE UPDATED AND CURRENT.

How do you, or is there a way to update and improve your website, without totally deleting what you are now using, so you still have some website on line until your new and up to date one, is available? My current website was designed 20 years ago-my partners figure something is better then nothing ,so they don't want to delete the old one until the new one is ready to post- how can we keep the old on line and then swap it out with the new one, once it is designed and ready?
Photo of david2937

david2937

  • 380 Points 250 badge 2x thumb
The new one will not be seen online until you publish it and furthermore, it will not be seen under your domain name until you point your domain to the new website. So, it should not be an issue-- just keep working on your new design and when ready, publish it and change your domain to point to the new one.

I had Homestead design my website for me a few years ago and now I would like to update it by using the templates that are available, not the designers they have on staff. Does anyone know how to get started with this?

The other question is whether a website can be created in another format than Homestead but still be hosted by Homestead

You can create a new website and then choose a template. Build the new site and then the domain can be switched over to the new site.

You can build a site using different tools, but you would not be able to edit using Sitebuilder. You would use the file manager to upload the pages and files you create. You would probably want to use Sitebuilder Plus if you elect to do this as it is easier to upload the files.

I want to completely re-design my website while having the old one active during the re-design. Is it possible to do a "Save As" using a new file name, make the changes to the new file name and when done do another save as using the old file name?

Yes, you can do the "save as" and rename the pages if you want, or it might be less confusing to just start a whole new site like shown above. Then, when you are done with the new site, you can just move the domain from the old site to the new one as shown on this page: https://community.homestead.com/homes...

Can I choose a new template and keep the old website up and running before I publish the new site?.

We have changed our website so much that I think it would be easier to start over with a fresh template. Does my current design stay up and running for the public to see until I publish the new design? Or once I choose to select a new template does everything public get deleted?

Also, a lot of websites, especially news related sites have top stories that flip from one picture to the next, is there any way to do that without using the image scroller? Some of the features on homestead look "cheap". I'm looking to make my website more professional looking instead of so "cut and paste".

You can keep you existing site & template by creating a second site, then when done, you can associate the domain with the new site and delete the old site.

If you are on a Starter account, you'll have to add the extra site upgrade before you'll see the link to create the new site. This page shows how to add upgrades:
How much to upgrade my account?

If you need any help please let us know.

As far as your second question, there are many options but it really depends on exactly what look, or functionality you have in mind. You might take a look at some 3rd party tools like WowSlider or ComSlider.

Quamba4393,  Concerning your 2nd post regarding audio players.  If you want the visitors to have the ability to download the file. Just create a standard hyperlink to the file. Then when right click the link it will give you an option to download or save the file.

All sites have the .homesead.com so that you are not required to have a domain name.  Once you create the new site, then you can change the domain to the new site and it will take over. You must create the site before you can assign a domain to it.  You don't have to create all the content, just the folder where the site is stored.
