I got the background updated to a wider screen (1024px) but I am having a hard time editing the content to fit the wider background... so right now my site is all pushed to the left. How do I expand the content to fit the new wider background? In the editor it will not let me move anything to the right of the screen.

The background might be wider but the rest is still the same size it started at. You'll have to manuall resize everything.

You can resize pictures by grabbing a corner and dragging, but if it looks pixelated after you'll either have to put up with it or re-load a larger-sized picture.

I can resize and move things  around in the original 800px format. It just wont let me move anything into that new expanded room.

You can adjust page width and position by using Page Settings > Advanced Settings.

Thanks. Ya it lets me widen the background but it wont let me move any of the other things into the new space created by the wider background. Like its blocked off or something.

Hello cory0592, different templates can be formatted differently, and with the template you are working in, you are going to want to move and stretch the elements to fill out the are. If you want to edit your existing elements, you will want to adjust and resize your master page elements. If you are trying to fill the space out, you may want to center align it, you can do this by clicking the Page Settings, then Advanced Settings, there is an option to Center align this page.
Your account supports multiple sites, if you are interested in trying to fill the area out a little bit more, have you taken a moment to check out the new Website Builder editor? To begin, all you need to do is go to Websites Manager page and create a new site. When you choose a new template, you will get the options to browse through newer templates.

To fill to the boundaries, resize the elements and expand your text boxes.

probably just my template. I might just have to wait until fall and rebuild from scratch with something newer

Thank you for your help.  I appreciate it a lot. I tried resizing to larger than 1024. I was able to fill the whole screen after a few trial and errors, however I still cannot add anything to that area on the right. In the editor it is blocked out. (like in the photo I attached) I can't move anything over to that side of the screen and I can't view the whole screen in the editor. So... although the background stuff looks right, I can't add content... so I put it back to centered and "normal" for now.

Try making a page completely from scratch.

You are using a master page. You'll need to edit that using Todd's instructions:
adjust and resize yourmaster page elements.
