I'd like to make rectangles opaque, rather than solid colors, so that the bottom image shows through (lightly). Is this possible?

Create your image using the Lunapic Ap: https://www169.lunapic.com/editor/
Upon completion, upload the image to your website.

Study lunapic. I use it to create image compositions for advertising, facebook promos and carousels for my Bigcommerce website. There are many tools to use.

For Sitebuilder you would have to make an opaque image. In the new Websitebuilder, opacity is a setting that can be adjusted, but it does require creating and building a new site.
