There were several emails that I did not receive yesterday but was told by support that email was slow but they were eventually getting delivered. However, there are at least a couple of emails I know that were never delivered and possibly more through my contact form from my business website. Please tell me if the email problem from yesterday has been resolved and when I will receive the emails that were not delivered yesterday.

I'll be asking for every dollar that I've ever given Homestead. The money that was paid to Homestead was for PROFESSIONAL services--not a bunch of hacks. False advertising.

Give us our money back!

I have been following this thread as of course, my email and the email of my clients were impacted during the blacklisting. I jumped ship early on as soon as the word blacklist was mentioned. Most of you probably already know this, but you can move your email accounts elsewhere and keep your website with Homestead. I was able to get everyone switched over to GoDaddy webmail last week in less than an hour. I have been through the blacklist problem before with another host (network solutions), so I know that anyone is vulnerable to it and I also know how long of a process it can be to get fully removed from those lists.

The email problem is separate from the web hosting --- which seems to be working. If you are able to get into your Hmail, you can download all of your contacts and folders and then upload them into the new mail provider.

You have two options when it comes to where you can have your email accounts setup. Either through your web host or through the company where you registered your domain (in my case all domains were bought and held by GoDaddy).

If you registered your domain name and web hosting through Homestead, than you will need to transfer your domain name over to someone like GoDaddy. It is a seamless transition and extremely easy to do.

Sorry to put my two cents in. Based on some of the responses, it looks like not everyone knew that you can take your email service to another provider while keeping your website services. Hopefully this all works itself out. This happened to me on network solutions years ago and it took a few weeks before everything was running smoothly again. Other than a small percentage, we are all using this service for business purposes, so just wanted to share the above as I understand the sensitive nature of running a business and the need for email in today's world. Best of luck!

bluehost.com for everything, and you can migrate your existing sites/emails/domains over there. They'll even give you your own IP(no unwarranted spam lists), and I heard that they have raving reviews from the grumpiest of admins.

To get blacklisted and not be able to remove themselves like Homestead wasn't, it takes multiple spam offenses. This has been happening, and the security issue has not been addressed. Wait, they DID advise us to create better passwords.

What about managing the website you created with Homestead? Can you manage it at Bluehost too?

We have gone along for 3 years with Homestead/Intuit with very few bumps....now all of a sudden it's every few days!!!!
We cannot function without reliable email, and it is scary not knowing what we're not getting. I'm trying to get some important documents out...and they are lost in space!
If you are going down the tubes have the decency to let us know!!!

What is going on and when can we rely on the service again? What is blacklisting and what does it have to do with this situation? I don't have the time or patience right now to research it while my business is falling apart.

Be warned. I set up our email through Network Solutions this morning. I went in to Homestead to try to delete our email accounts so we would just start using Net.Sol. instead but it denied me deleting them. Started a chat with a rep that skirted around every question I had and tried to tell me to change the MX information in our account. Essentially this would have screwed up my website access and who knows how long it would have taken to fix it. I JUST wanted to cancel our email accounts and she tried to get me to change everything on the Homestead site. Clearly these people are not with it. Still have not gotten one email all day at the office.
They should be ashamed of themselves over there at Homestead.

The MX records are exactly what you would want to change to keep your website up and running - those are your email records and network solutions should have supplied you with those. Since your site is hosted by Homestead, you have to change the mail settings (mx records) on this end.

***Caution on the below instructions, I am NOT an agent of homestead, I am only a customer and providing you with the information that I used to switch my email over using the MX records and it worked fine.

Just log into your account click on email and delete all of the email accounts you currently have. Then go to the domains tab and click on the "advanced dns settings" to open up the domain records. Scroll down to the MX Records and put in what network solutions gave you. There is a chance you may have to add an additional MX record (godaddy gave me two records) if so, just click on the add record and put in the second record from network solutions.

The second scenario that you can use, and this is assuming your domain was registered at network solutions is to delete the homestead accounts and contact network solutions and have them reset the nameservers to their default settings with network solutions and then have them put in the following a records and cname records:

A Record Host @ points to 209.157.71.50
A Record Host * points to 209.157.71.50
C Name www points to websites.homestead.com

That will make the website reside to homestead and your email reside to network solutions.

Again - do not work for homestead but have done the above both ways and has worked every time for me. Hell, if you can't send or receive any emails right now ... this would be the time to try. Call up Network Solutions and explain to them you are uncomfortable changing the domain records and ask them about the second option. They should be glad to help you.

so Angela, are you suggesting that we take Dave's advice and bail out of homestead email now? If that is the kind of confidence the employees have in the company then...wow (or am I misinterpreting this?)

I do have confidence in our products. At this moment - our email is suffering a blacklist problem that can take time to recover from. I understand that most businesses can't wait for our reputation to recover. Our team is actively working on an alternative to our customers but I do appreciate Dave's suggestions for customers. I think he provided valuable information and I'm glad he was willing to share what he did and what his status is.

that is the info we need to hear. This will not be fixed soon then? We all need immediate solutions for our businesses...so even if you can patch things up temporarily, this "blacklist" you're referring to (which I don't really understand) will be an ongoing problem for some time?
I don't want to have to be a technological genius and learn the reasons behind this mess...I don't want to be on a forum complaining about it either.... I just want to do business and serve my clients effectively (and hopefully not lose any)
So I guess I'll be looking elsewhere for email service although I'd rather not have to do that.

I don't understand why they are so unresponsive. My email address was hacked and I reported the issue to them over 2 months ago, as did others. I got no help, support or valid suggestions. Nothing until last week when Homestead shut down my accounts. No warning, no "here's what we need you to do," just shut them down, then notified me over 12 hours later!! I followed their instructions to the letter immediately, but still can't get email succesfully. My request for more help has gone ignored.

I'm still having trouble and want an answer on whether or not HMail is going to pay for me to have my email somewhere else, since I'm already paying for email through them as a package deal - we have several email accounts and at $7.00 per month for each one, that racks up, when I'm already paying. We also have several offsite personnel, so changing passwords, setting up new email accounts etc. is not easy.

This issue should not be happening with a company that at a minimum should have a Tier 3 level of service. Redundancy and the ability to divert to a different set of IP addresses should be standard operating procedure.

Hello............Homestead??? Are you people that moronic that you can't fix this? Seriously? This is so pathetic on your part. Emails not coming in, not going out, three hour delays on emails, email crashing all the time. What is your major malfunction over there? Fix it and be done with it. I have never dealt with a Company that can't handle simple S*&^ as this. Wake Up!

Will we be able to access our email accounts once they are fixed?

Stephanie9938

  • 950 Points 500 badge 2x thumb
Angela, your response is not truthful. If we can't access your servers, there is something else going on entirely than just a reputation problem.

We used to have a Tier 2 level facility. So don't fill us full of bull anymore. There are many, many other things you could be doing.
1. Those that are getting returned mail because it's being blocked for any reason, you should be collecting and working through each one. You have nothing on your site that explains what someone should do in the event their mail is returned to them - that should be an absolute MUST! in protecting the environment for everyone else. If those are dealt with timely then bigger issues can be handled before they get out of hand.
2. You should have proactively sent an email, notice on your blog and a PRESS RELEASE NOTIFYING everyone about the issue at hand so it could be received and noticed by your customers and your customers customers. Then everyone could have reacted in a proactive manner as well.
3. Homestead should have a redundant plan - it is obvious that you don't.
4. There should be idle i.p. addresses that could be used in the event of this kind of catastrophe in order to point clean mail once the offenders have been isolated.
And, of utmost importance, you should be communicating - CONSTANTLY - and if not you, then someone else - addressing each and every issue to keep this community calm.

UPDATE - April 2, 2013 3:44 PM PST
Today's email issues have been resolved and all systems are functioning again. Inbound/Outbound email was queued during this time, so there is not expected to be any mail lost. However, we had to restore some email configuration from a backup. Any email accounts that were created since 1am Pacific may need to be re-created within the email manager. Also any password changes since 1am Pacific may also need to be re-applied.

Thank you!

At no point have I seen a Homestead CEO, President or VP address this issue to the hundreds of small business owners that have relied on the Homestead / Intuit products. It's shameless. I feel for the people on the phones and Angela. This is completely unacceptable. I just switched our e-mail over to Network Solutions and while I'm sure there is no company 100% infallable ... I feel with NS I will have attention paid to me when I call --- at least their Customer Service is open 24/7. The switch has been fairly easy thus far - we just have to get the mobile phone part set up tomorrow - ran out of time today. Good bye suckahs!!!!!!!! (Intuit/Homestead) ... not you guys battling the issues.

Oh and I will be mentioning this ongoing saga at networking meetings and am calling the press in Denver, SF Bay area, New Orleans as well as CNN, CNET and some others. The simple lack of executive presence and concern and most of all notification that this was going on until e-mail stopped is what ticks me off. Don't ignore me.

Mary, I too have been a long time Homestead customer and until this email mess, I have been happy with them. As Dave mentioned above, you can easily take your email business elsewhere and stay with Homestead with your websites. I have had very little downtime over the years with my websites, so I will definitely keep them in place. Hope that helps.
