I have my website linked to my gmail account because it is more convenient. For the first time, this week someone had trouble emailing me. I don't know if it has to do with using gmail or not. No one else has complained yet - but maybe they are just not getting through! I tried to use the link myself, and got a set-up wizard for Outlook. Does everyone who emails me need to use Outlook? Should I not link my gmail account?

It sounds like you are using a link to mail to you. This does require that you have a default mail client installed and configured. It can be Outlook or another mail client. If you add a form or contact button instead then this is not required. Unfortunately with a form, the sender is basically your website, so you can not reply. You would need to create a new email message and address it manually.

I do have gmail installed and configured, and this has not been a problem before to my knowledge. Yes, I just reply to the addressee.

Asked a friend to send me an email through the site, when she clicked the link, nothing happened.

OK, got a clue: the copy in the link field shows up as "mailto" my email address, not just my email address. So when I click on it now, it comes up as the whole phrase, "mailtomyemailaddress", which of course is NOT my email address! I have changed it and saved, but it just keeps going back to the way it was before I changed it.

I use Outlook and your link works fine for me. It brings up a new mail message for the default mail client. You may be able to make it work in a web based mail program like gmail, but it is not set as a default, so it can't be controlled by us or you. It can only be controlled by the site visitor having a default mail program set up. This is a reason why many people use forms instead. mailto:emailaddress is the coding that tells your computer to launch a new mail message from the set default mail program. It should have a colon(:) between mailto and the email address.
