This change will only affect some users that point their domain to Homestead by A record and CNAME, OR you point your website from a Homestead hosted domain to another website host AND use Homestead email. If you have all services with Homestead, or don't use Homestead email you don't need to change.

If you receive an email that looks something like the one below, then please follow the instructions and make the required changes. If you don't receive this email or don't have email hosted with Homestead, then you don't need to do anything.

Action Needed - Changes to your DNS
**************************************************************

We are in the process of making some changes to our mail infrastructure to help improve delivery and reliability. Since you manage your own DNS, we need you to change the records you use for your MXes in your DNS, to ensure continued mail delivery

In your DNS, you currently have 3 Mx records for your domain that point to 66.96.142.50, 66.96.142.51, and 66.96.142.52.

We will need you to change the IP of those records from 66.96.142.5x to 66.96.140.50, 66.96.140.51, and 66.96.140.52.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled HELP! "Action Needed - Changes to your DNS".

I received an email today from Homestead (pasted below). However, when I try to "join the conversation" - it just takes me to the main Help page on Homestead, I can't find any 'conversation' currently taking place on this topic, and as I'm not a website genius, I actually (and stupidly) have no idea where I am supposed to make these MX changes.  And, chat is once again not available during normal working hours. So - I need some assistance in helping me resolve this matter so I don't lose access to emails.  Help?!

         Kelly

Dear Kelly,

We are in the process of making some changes to our mail infrastructure to help improve delivery and reliability. Since you manage your own DNS, we need you to change the records you use for your MXes in your DNS, to ensure continued mail delivery

In your DNS, you currently have 3 MX records for www.southwestpetlv.com that point to <numbers redacted>.

We will need you to change the IP of those records from <numbers redacted>.

Sorry Kelly7835, I forgot to merge you here. Yes, you will need to make the changes at wix as you are using our email and their nameservers.

My DNSes already are at 66.96.140.5x, and I still keep getting the "Permission denied user is defunct" message. I have changed my password 3 times and my Homestead email address twice. I can't open my email no matter what I do. And I am not pleased.

Jack8357,

I merged your earlier question into the topic that solves your issue. You can find the answer in the invalid credentials topic.

Hi Drew, I got this email and need to change my record name to point to the new servers. The reason I am with Homestead is because I am a very low tech person. I have figured out a lot of things but not this one. It would have been helpful to have the instructions on how to do this in the email. All it said was to call the support center but I don't have a whole day to hold on, if the call ever got answered. The other option was the chat room but I don't find anything here either. I really would appreciate a step by step on how to make this change. Thank you very much.

Drew, I have many websites that I have the domain with Go Daddy, and point by changing the A Record and Cname per the instructions I have always used. None of them are tied to homestead email. Are those okay or do I need to change all of those?  I use homestead email but with all of those domains, I own the domain through homestead. Let me know because I still can not access my domain center during this migration

Hi Jonathan T.,

Any domain hosted at omestead, you need do nothing. We can make those change automatically if necessary. The only need for changing is if you point your domain to us by DNS records(not nameserver) AND use Homestead mail. If none of the Godaddy domains use Homestead mail, you will be fine. No changes needed. If you do need to change even one, then you can post here. I can update the DNS directly with the registrar.

I'm not sure I completely understand the above.  Homestead hosts my domain name, but it points to my site on WIX. I do not use the mail at all. Do I need to change anything, and, if so, are the changes made on WIX or here on Homestead?

Hi Mark, I'm confused too. My name servers are currently pointed from homestead to wordpress, where I host my blog. I rec'd the email saying I need to change my name servers, but won't that mess up my wordpress blog? I'm not very good when it comes to any of this stuff, sorry. Thanks!

Thanks Drew.  I asked because the email I received today did not specifically mention email. This is what it said, just to clarify........

We are in the process of making changes to our public IP space. This will change the IP address for any A record and nameservers. Since you manage your own DNS, you will be required to make the following changes:

In your DNS, you currently have your nameservers pointing to an IP address:www.vidioview.com

We will need you to change this record to be a CNAME that points to :

Name Server: NS1.MDNSSERVICE.COM

Name Server: NS2.MDNSSERVICE.COM

Name Server: NS3.MDNSSERVICE.COM

Please do nothing at this time. If you receive the message at the top, then you can make the needed changes at the company whose nameservers you are using.

I recv'd this too. I got through on chat after 35 minute wait and here is what I found out (it doesn't apply to me ) Im pasting the chat below in case it may help someone else:

Shruthi S: Okay
Shruthi S: Please give me 2 minutes.
Carol Detloff: you can tell what I am asking about?
Shruthi S: Yes.
Carol Detloff: thanks
Shruthi S: Thank you for being on hold.
Shruthi S: Carol, this email is only for those customers who have just updated the ip address.
Carol Detloff: ?
Carol Detloff: I dont think I updated anything
Carol Detloff: so whi did I receive it
Shruthi S: Currently, nameservers of the domain is pointing to us. So, I suggest you to ignore this email.
Shruthi S: Yes. Please ignore this email.
Carol Detloff: I wint get a disruption in service to my site?
Shruthi S: No. You will not get any disruption in service.
Carol Detloff: Ok . thats all I need to know? I waited a long time to reach you?
Shruthi S: I am sorry for the hold time Carol.
Carol Detloff: that wait time is not your fault
Shruthi S: Thank you for understanding :)
Carol Detloff: I just dont have time 3 days before christmas to wait again for help. you are saying I am clear - I can ignore this email?
Shruthi S: Yes. You are right Carol.
Carol Detloff: OK thanks for clarifying this issue
Shruthi S: You are most welcome :) Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Carol Detloff: no thanks
Shruthi S: There will be a survey on a scale of 1-10 to rate my performance, and we strive to provide "10" quality service on every interaction. So was there anything that would keep me from getting a 10 from you today?
Shruthi S:
Carol Detloff: No you'd better get onto the next anxious Homestead customer now
Shruthi S: Your feedback in survey will be a huge help for me. The survey will appear after you end this chat by clicking on the 'rate and exit' button at the top of your chat window. Thanks for chatting with me today. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Thanks for posting that, Carol.  Since, to me anyway, her comments make even less sense than the original email, altho she was trying her best, it's nice to have proof in case our service is disrupted. Again, perhaps Drew can clear this up.  And, if the email was sent in error, perhaps Homestead should send out a correction and avoid all this time we're spending.  Happy Holidays.

Hi Drew, I received the email regarding the DNS changes, however, it is for a domain name that is very, very similar to mine - ultimatepigroaster.com. Mine is ultimatepigroast (and ultimaterotisserie, which is what I changed my company name to). I do not think the "roaster" url is live anymore, but I wanted to clear up the confusion and perhaps point the support team toward the actual website owner.

We have also received the following email, what action should we take?

Dear Jeff,

We are in the process of making changes to our public IP space. This will change the IP address for any CNAME record and nameservers. This only applies to those domains that do not use Homestead's nameservers.

We recommend pointing to your homestead websites using CNAME records instead of an IP address. This provides flexibility if, for any reason, we may need to change the IP address to which you are pointed. Because you manage your own DNS, you will be required to make the following changes:

Currently, your domain,www.millerpromotionsllc.com does not use our nameservers

We will need your nameserver to point to:

Name Server: NS1.MDNSSERVICE.COM

Name Server: NS2.MDNSSERVICE.COM

Name Server: NS3.MDNSSERVICE.COM

If you have email that is not hosted with Homestead, then you will have to update your MX records from within the Homestead domain manger, after you have changed the nameservers.

If you do not wish to change the nameservers or have other questions, please join the conversation online or call us at 800-428-3170.

I, too, just received the same email, which is even more confusing than the first one, which I received yesterday.

I own the domain www.clarkelaw.com, which is registered through tucows, by terra-byte.

My website is located at http://hstrial-wwalc.homestead.com/ to which web traffic, for www.clarkelaw.com, is redirected, redirection.net.

Email to @clarkelaw.com is redirected, by redirection.net, to my comcast.net email account.

I take it, from Drew N's posts, that I should still ignore it because I don't use Homestead's email. If I'm wrong, please help me.

I took over the handling of our website recently. Have no idea if the website is hosted by Homestead. I do know the email ability is not used. How do I tell if the website is hosted by Homestead? At this time, I am leaning to the "do nothing at this time" position. Hopefully, that is the correct position. If not, I need help in doing whatever is necessary to keep the site up and running.

Homestead is trying to get everyone to switch their nameservers to Homestead. This gives Homestead more control over your domain, but gives you less control. By switching nameservers to Homestead, your domain's "zone file" becomes hosted at Homestead, instead of hosted at your domain service provider. Your "zone file" is where you type in the IP addresses (servers) for both your email service and website host. For example, let's say your domain service provider is Network Solutions. Right now you can login to Network Solutions and type in MX (mail) servers for your email that point to which ever email provider you want, and also type in "A records" that point to website servers for which ever website host you want. Homestead is proposing that you now have to login to Homestead to specify your email and website servers.

I do not want Homestead to have control of my zone file. At any point they could remove my ability to change my mail servers to another company (or make it difficult), and could make it difficult for me to switch my website to another website host. Homestead's approach with the current email they sent out confirms that I do not want them to be in control of my zone file.

If you agree that Homestead customers should have the choice to continue to host their zone file outside of Homestead at a neutral domain service provider, please let Homestead know.

Hi all,

If you have not received a reply concerning the recent DNS changes that may be required, then please each of you create a private topic and I will provide you with the new records if you need them. For security reasons we will not post these publicly.

Thanks
