Error page comes up on my index, unable to remove it. Went in File section but not sure it was the correct way to delete it?

Deleting the error page file might not fix the issue. Can you SEE your index/home page when editing?  Is your site already live and a domain connected to it already?

Don't delete it. Update your home page using Page Settings: page name SB: index.html.
404 ERROR:
Per Google: https://www.google.com/search?num=30&site=webhp&source=hp&q=404+error&oq=404&gs_....
"The HTTP 404 Not Found Error means that the webpage you were trying to reach could not be found on the server. It is a Client-side Error which means that either the page has been removed or moved and the URL was not changed accordingly, or that you typed in the URL incorrectly."
Generally there's no need to make any adjustment. Removing the 404 page may disable your customer to be directed to your site. 404's may be produced by page name changes.

The index page comes up fine for me, and the siteerror404 page is still there, which it should be. That page catches anyone that might have a link to a page or type the name of the page incorrectly. You can edit the page to place your own content. Maybe an apology, or a little humor. Place your navigation on the page so they can easily get to your other pages. If you delete it, then they will get sent to the Homestead siteerror404 and they will no longer be on your site.
