I want to completely update or give a new look to the whole website but the website needs to stay functional during the process. The posts I saw were confusing and some 2-3 years old. Surely there is new information and an easy way to do this with changing my domain name.

You want to build your new website using a new template?

cahea, you can add a new website to the account. Select a template and build the site. Once done with the new site, you can simply move the domain to the new site.

Is there a way to see the template in larger and more detail other than going through the Change of Design button? I would like to look at the templates before choosing one.

What happens to the old site after you have moved the domain to the new site?

There is not another way besides selecting the template. Nothing happens to the old website itself when you associate the domain to the new website, except the domain will no longer open that site.
