Why doesn't Homestead make it EASY to add an image slider to a website?

Note: This topic was created from a reply on the WOW Slider slideshows in an Intuit website topic.

Thank you for adding this topic to the Ideas section. Many websites (including www.homestead.com) have images sliding or fading to the next image. SiteBuilder should make it easy to add those effects, without having to add html coding. If not, I think Homestead should remove that image effect (and any font or feature not available on SiteBuilder) from its own website because it appears to misrepresent the functionality of SiteBuilder.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that you can get rid of watermark, but that's illegal.
On their webpage (on download site) says that WOW Slider is free for non-commercial use. So you need commercial license.
It seems fair to me.

Has anyone used wow slider with Sitebuilder plus yet. I'm finding it impossible to add the folders to the root file manager.

Hi Billy Fishback,

I might understand now. Are you trying to drag a folder to the file manager? If so, use the file manager to create the folder, then select all the files from your computer in that folder and drag them to the folder. If that isn't the problem, what are the folder names?

Ive tried this also and when it is complete it shows only text with the bullet points someone also mentioned..WOW slider only works when I revert back to desktop to build this type of design. So unless you try this yourself I have been using ComSlider but it is by far inferior.

I have used wowslider with Plus before, but not in sometime. When I get a chance I will do so again and see if there is a change. I'm sorry but it might not be until later in the week.

Thanks George7467, in my opinion image sliders are the one of the greatest enhancements to any site under today's minimalist design standard. I'll be sure to follow because I'd like to see where this conversation is headed. ~ Regards

I also agree George7467,

A quality flash transition or slide show can really make a difference in how effective a website can be. I realize it's not feasible to go out and buy some expensive software when it may only be used once or twice. I'm not sure if you are interested but if you are one of the people I described, we do offer Flash elements (which you can update and change pictures in) as a premium service, which basically means we can create one for you without having to pay for a full blown custom website. You can see details here..

I've been using SWish for about 10 years and absolutely love it's ease
of use to create any number of transitional slides that easily import into Homestead as SWF files. Although Flash isn't Mac friendly, it works great. (www.SwishZone.com). This is one of my sites that uses the product: www.Siltran.com

Do you have video editing software? If so, create a video file for your site with cross fade transitions from photo to photo and then create a video file. Once you are on the page you want to edit go to "insert" and click on the "video player" not "Youtube" and then place it where you want on the page. I believe you cane even do it with a simple program such as MS Movie Maker.

Thanks for sharing Tracy6081. That is a nice looking site.  I'm not familiar with that particular slide show. Do you know off hand if it produces any other output besides swf files?  As you mentioned it's not Apple/Mac friendly and now days flash won't play on the newer Android devices either.

The other output options are: 1) HTML+swf, 2) exe (projector), 3) avi, 4) gif, and 5) png.

One of the best ways to do this is with a Flash element. Currently our SiteBuilder does not do this. If you would like to see this feature added please click the +1 button above.

If you have any software that can create a flash file (.swf format), then it can be imported using the steps here: https://community.homestead.com/homes...

Another option is to have our design team custom code a Flash element into your site so that you can periodically change the pictures on your own. View this thread for details. https://community.homestead.com/homes...

Technology is changing very fast. Many people still want to implement Flash into their sites, but Google has been hinting that they may start penalizing sites for this. We'll do our best to accommodate our customers needs as our software evolves.

How do you apply effects within Photo Gallery?.

For instance, I've created a Photo Gallery on one of my pages, but the images look like they could do with a little bit more "design pizzazz". How do we go about adding stuff like a drop-shadow behind an individual pic, or having each pic within a frame (not just a coloured border)?

Perhaps this isn't a question, as such .. more of a poke in Homestead's ribs to say that elements of the site builder tech (photos, especially) need updating to make them more visually appealing.

Hello all. I've read the topic string and I see some needs I have in common with other users. I'd like to use a slider (specifically text i.e. with letters sliding on screen individually to quickly form the name of my company). Can someone please let me know where we are with the advancements in web tools offered by Homestead so I can implement this graphic? For me, $400 will not be feasible to acquire this capability. But, that was some time ago in this string. Can someone pls update me on where we are to implement sliding text in our website design process? Much appreciated.

Scrolling text or a "marquee" is not a common request, so I don't think it will be anything added unless we start to get more requests. However if you do a Google search for "scrolling text" or "marquee", you'll probably find dozens of sites that give you the code for free.

Image Scroll Needs To Be More Flexible....

I have used the image scroll for sponsors on our track website. I cannot seem to be able to delete some of the images from the scroll, even though I have deleted them from the file manager. I still see them listed on the scroll and a missing image icon is on the published page. does anybody have an idea, or is it just rebuild the whole scroll?

I spent a month creating a photographer's website. Everything looks great except the slider feature for the images. It looks choppy and amateurish and make me nauseous. I wish there was a way to make the images morph into each other in position like a great slide show does. I will have to pull the site down until Homestead come up with this option or look for another company to work with. It is better to have no site then to have a bad one representing your work. I don't know why this option doesn't exist. I can't imagine it being that tough. Get to work Homestead! You have great options but you are behind the eight ball on this one.

I actually think Homestead is great ... I can work around everything they offer and have never had a problem with technical support ... as long as it was In the daytime by voice. They have always taken care of my needs quickly.

I went to school for Web design and frankly I disdain working with HTML so I prefer to use Homestead where I can see what I am designing. I have had no problem creating original sites within the parameters of what Homestead offers. The amenities are decent but we really need a way to present a slide show without scrolling. I am envisioning that it would be set up just like the scroll is. We would select the images we want to use but instead of scrolling the code would be set up to have the images materialize in one position, one after the other.

We have a ton of great ideas to work on, unfortunately, we were somewhat stalled by Intuit, and now that they have sold us, we can get back to making improvements. We just have to finish migrating off of Intuit and upgrading some basic systems, like email and ecommerce.

Thanks

I guess I'm in the dark concerning all the issues so many are having. I've been with Homestead about 10 years, and I've received great help from all the customer service reps I have talked to so far. I don't know anything about htlm or anything of the sort, however, I have enjoyed using the features Homestead offers. I would agree with them adding some kind of flash/slide show feature. I've used outside software in order to add this feature to websites in the pass. I don't plan on leaving Homestead and hope to continue with them for many more years.

I am hopeful that after our company gets past some of the major migrations that we are going through, that we can focus again on adding new features to the SiteBuilder.  Google and some of the other SE's are really starting to frown on the use of flash and many browsers no longer support it, so it's unlikely that they'll create a flash tool but it would still be nice to have a more sophisticated slide show of some sort.

Hello Homestead Community,

I was trying to install the Wow Slider, but gave up. I would have to take some computer classes to learn how to do that. It is too involved. I found a site called,
http://www.comslider.com/#. I now have a slider on my website! My website is www.stackschickenfarm.com. All I had to do was click on the insert button and go to more, click on the html button. I then pasted the code that I copied from the Comslider site. After I pasted the code and then clicked on preview, the slider showed up! I then repositioned the block to be where I wanted it, like the Google sense ads. On the Comslider site, you upload your photos there, you have templates that you can choose from. You can also change the color of the background, size of the pictures, etc. With the free sliders, they only can show 3-5 photos. I have 5 photos that show up on mine.

I also wanted to mention that Comslider does offer different premium sliders that you can purchase. As I mentioned before, I am using the free one that has a max of 5 pictures, but they also offer 30 mb of storage with unlimited photos you can add for only $19/year. Their other plans have more storage and range in price from $35, $75, $195 per year. I am going to try the $19/year plan eventually! It is well worth it and so easy to use!

This is Todd again. I wanted to let you know that when you do swap out your pictures on Comslider, the new pictures will show up on your website after making the change from Comslider, but you will need to click on the edit tab of your html block in Homestead, recopy and paste the html into your website. This way your new picture's website link can work.

Vili

  • 330 Points 250 badge 2x thumb
I think this is not the case, namely, when you update the slideshow on comslider.com, the changes are reflected immediately on your web site. You don't need to recopy the comSlider HTML snippet code.

I had to recopy and paste the html into my website, for the new picture showed up on Comslider site, but not on my website. Possibly a glitch on my end?

Vili, Thanks so much for the clarification. I did just add a picture on the Comslider site and was happy to see that the picture did show up automatically on my website, without having to copy and paste the html again to my website! It must have been a glitch on my end, for I did have to do a computer restore recently. Thanks again!

I did want to clarify that the new picture that I posted on my slider this morning showed up on my Homestead website automatically, but I did have to add the corresponding html link onto the Comslider website. I have it set up where when someone clicks on a certain bird image from the slider images on my homestead website, they are then brought to the specific detailed page of that bird on my website. I love that extra feature that Comslider offers! You can literally click on my chicken picture on the slider and it will take you directly to that specific page. I tried clicking on the picture, prior to adding the link and it did not take me to the specific bird page. That does need to be linked from the Comslider site. Comslider has an area where it gives you that cool option to link your html page of your website with the specific photo. You can even have the link open up a new page window if you choose.
