Building the Mobile site on the new builder

This should have been obvious to me, but it wasn't. I built several pages before tackling the Mobile and then spent lots of hours (frustrating, painful, nerve-wracking) trying to get the mobile version to look even half-way decent, sometimes successfully and sometimes I had to completely re-do the desktop version. The should-have-been obvious part? Build the mobile as you go. I now add a few things on the desktop and then adjust on the mobile. Infinitely easier and more successful, less wasted hours and fewer temper tantrums and soap words.

Lesson learned.

Thanks for actually articulating that :) I've rebuilt my site 3 or 4 times now to get the mobile view correct, and I started checking my work between the desktop/mobile views with every change - lo and behold, the mobile view works and looks pretty good :) Only took me about a month to figure out . . . sigh

Cheers

Well, between the two of us we have a couple of months into getting clarity ...
Some trips just take longer than others.

I looked at my home page on the mobile version for the very first time last night......... Closed it, shut the computer down, took a couple of headache tabs and went to sit in a dark room... WHEN I think the chance of an ulcer has receded I will go back.. and look again and probably lean on you both for sanity, never mind clarity....

Of course we'll help when we can. SD has posted some good pointers so grab those and then just ask once you get over the melt down!

To be honest Susan I have lost any enthusiasm for the new websitebuilder but by all means take a look, maybe you can salvage something?

http://hssurveys.homesteadcloud.com/

Having now opened pandoras box, everytime I visit via the url the mobile version loads before it resorts to the main web page... Not very professional..As SD has said he has rebuilt his website to "suit" the mobile version many times, something I am not really prepared to do as its supposed to be a "benefit" not an extra chore or a trade off.... Because I am hosting a couple of websites for RAF Squadrons I guess I have to stay with Homestead but will see what I can do with sitebuilder+ and  Duda. Shame really, I have enjoyed the past 16 years having a lot of fun building websites.. Nothing has been remotely "fun" with websitebuilder..Anyway, don't spend much time looking at my website, I am sure you have enough to do with your own. Next  week I will "hide" it form the web and just tinker with it from time to time. I will still be kicking around in here with SB+  god bless

I can't give you the rah-rah speech because I had my own melt down.  I was cruising along overcoming the glitches that the mobile presents and was feeling that I could make a go of it. Then I decided I didn't like the Navigation so changed it - BIG MISTAKE. It is completely missing on some pages and on others it has dropped down to the bottom of the page.
You are so right when you say it should be a benefit and we shouldn't have to spend hours attempting to coax it into some semblance of a decent mobile site. I already have this site's mobile on Duda and the only reason it took me awhile to build was because I was new to the program NOT because it was buggy as heck and poorly presented as is the case with Homestead's mobile version.
Am so discouraged and frustrated at this point and don't know whether to proceed or throw in the towel.
Don't be a stranger, ya hear!  :)

No chance of me leaving the forum Susan, I have made some really nice friends here over the years, present company the longest, but mieleiman, SD and other builders plus Drew and Todd. But I am so done with websitebuilder and will now concentrate on revamping my SB+ website. Had a play with Duda,, odd how much it looks like Homestead, but it really didn't like Firefox, kept stopping with script errors.

So, back to the old site but my sincerest and heartfelt thanks to you and the rest of the "guys" for all your insights, advice and humour along the way. Maybe, when Homestead developers get the programme sorted and deliver what was promised in this brave new world, I will give it another go.. In the meantime I will get on with building my business in the real world. If anyone can beat the bldy programme into submission, its you, so I will keep up to date with your trials and tribulations and wish you the very best of luck with the process.

Thank you for the vote of confidence Brian! This latest bug however seems to be winning. We shall see if I can figure it out before I toss the computer out the window for real. Am hoping that Drew will be able to give me some guidance.

Til later ...

I'm in the process of rebuilding my site and, thankfully, reading a lot of great "lessons learned" along the way and keeping tabs on the mobile site as I go (thank you susan2829!). Yet I'm having problems with the header in the mobile version. The navigation menu has gone from the top but it's there at the bottom (as it is in the desktop too)... It was there before and now it's gone and I did not "hide from mobile". Can I add one back?

Speaking of hiding, if I've hidden something from the mobile view and changed my mind and want it back, is there any way to get it to show again?

In mobile view click on Settings in the left hand menu. This shows any element that is hidden and you click on the 'eye' to make it reappear.

Your menu is probably still there - they do have a tendency to vanish. It could be that it is set as the same color as the background or it could be hiding behind the header image. Hide that and see if the menu shows.  Also, if you don't have the menu within the header section it won't show.

That makes sense and I learned something new, thank you for the tip on the Settings to the left! BUT the menu is not the same color as the background nor hiding behind anything. It is on the desktop header but not the mobile. I have a menu on the bottom footer on the desktop and it's showing in the mobile, but not in the header. Confusing to say the least, especially as it was there yesterday!

This builder has a pretty fun learning curve, I've been enjoying it immensely, until something like this happens. :l  I'm assuming I may need to rebuild the header...

This is one of the buggiest issues with the Mobile. I've had to ferret it out on several sites. On one site I found it down among the text, on another it was lurking behind the header image, on yet another I finally realized it was no longer a part of the header and once I moved it up on the desk top so it was a part of the header it showed up on the mobile.  It's definitely a challenging builder!
Drew is in today so perhaps he can figure it out.

I just took the 15 minutes to rebuild the header from scratch... luckily it worked. Even though the site crashed at one point! That was a new one. That's the exact reason I gave up on the original desktop version so I'm really hopeful the crash was a rare occurrence. Thank you for the tips and wisdom. It's been extremely helpful. :)

Glad you got it back. I've not had any crash issues, but I'm sure Drew will have some idea.
You may have discovered this but just in case. Next to the undo and redo arrows in the top tool bar there is a third arrow.  With it you can go back to a previous version if need be. It can be handy.
Happy building!

Sorry, I was slow here. I did see that you got the menu back up top. It seems to be on the bottom too, or was. You should be able to click it and then use the up and down arrows to move it up or down among the other elements.

Now, I have had no issues with it crashing, so I also hope it is rare for you.

Hey there, I just rebuilt my site with the new site builder and truly the new features and functionality are AWESOME. I tripped on the mobile part early on and am tweaking as I go. Now my website is almost ready to go and i am trying to get rid of the UGLY Duda site (because I hate the thing) and am pleased to see Homestead now has a mobile site option. But here's the catch: I do not have a smartphone so I simulate my site on a online simulator. I redirected my Duda site to point to the new site I built and the desktop site loads on the mobile, not the mobile site. Do they both have the same address? What am I doing wrong?
Try for yourself and tell me know what you find:
Duda - http://mobile.dudasite.com/site/prairiesprideglutenfree
The Real Thing - http://worldsbestpies.homesteadcloud.com/

What do you see?

There is no redirect required. The URL for the mobile site is the same as for the desktop. The site detects the type of browser and shows it appropriately. When I go to that site on my mobile, I see the mobile version of the new Websitebuilder.

I would not need one but I have a QR code on my packages pointing to this site. So I'm stuck with it for now and have to redirect.

I don't think you will be able to redirect the site to Duda, as the built in redirect would probably override the header code. I will see if I can work on this.

I see. I was hoping the QR went to the domain, then the link would follow the domain no matter where you had it and how the configuration was set. Let me test some and see what I can do. Unfortunately, I can't promise I can do it all before next week.

The best I can figure is to add HTML to the Duda site to redirect to the homesteadcloud site. The thing you have to be careful with, is that Websitebuilder sites only have 1 URL. So worldsbestpies.homesteadcloud.com will stop working as soon as you attach the domain, so you would have to update the redirect when you change the domain.

I actually am extremely disappointed with the mobile site builder, I can't move things where I want to and the way everything is resized doesn't always work for our website. I can't add text to the mobile site to tell people where to click to open the menus (which isn't obvious) unless it's on desktop view also, and I've already spent too much time in the phone with homestead to attempt a somewhat decent mobile view. I was told a year ago that they were working on fixes and so far nothing has changed. I think the mobile view needs to have the option to not be so dependent on the desktop view and to have the functionality when building it to add or move things like you can in the desktop view. Very frustrating because I know the majority of our clients and new clients use their phones or tablets to look us up.

I totally agree with those that find the mobile editor that is part of Websitebuilder does not work intuitively, easily and the Text editor shows functions that essentially never work. When going into the mobile text editor very few of the editing functions work...I cannot change the font consistantly (only some fonts " work") changing the point size using the advanced mobile text editor almost never works, but rather changes the vertical position of a sectrion instead. Changing the font color doesn't work properly if at all. Basically none of the editing "style" changes work consistently and as stated some don't work at all.

I have large text over my gallery  images on the home page of my site and can't resize the text on the mobile site so there are huge letters that don't wrap which are in a huge "section".  Ultimately I  had to hide the entire first section. After calling support twice I was told the inability to edit text using the "style" editor in the mobile version is a "known issue". The work around was to insert a "paragraph" text element using the desktop editor and add my text but do absolutely nothing else, that is absolutly no editing at all.

I was then to go to the mobile version and using the mobile version "style" function, use the gear to get to the advanced text editor settings and then the mobile editing functions would work. I was then to edit the mobile version first, then go back to my HP and then edit the text.

The reason given is that as soon as one made any change at all to the text on the desktop version, the text editing functions "locked up" on the mobile editor and would prevent the style text editor from working! Basically, "they" (the invisible developers, perhap) haven't been able, or can't fix the problem.

I followed the directions to the letter (one time with someone from support) and guess what...the "work around" didn't work! As soon as one goes back to the desktop and edits the text,  it immediately changes the text on the mobile version, which then disables or "locks" the mobile text editor in the "style" mode, and we're back to square one.

After many years with Homestead and using "sitebuilder" and being told the "developers" were working on a problem or would eventually get to an "issue" on their "list" and now being told the same thing,  I've come to the conclusion that perhaps there are no "developers" and nothing will ever get fixed. Technical support people do the best they can with what they have but after many years and after using three website editors, I have given up hope anything will change.

Hello Lyndsey4094

The mobile editor is a bit more limited than the desktop, but definitely workable. The text can either be edited in the desktop to reflect in mobile, or you can use the instructions in this article:
https://community.homestead.com/homestead/topics/text-formatting-in-website-builder

The images can be fixed by changing the format in desktop to "Fit" . The 3 line navigation menu is pretty typical and most people will know exactly what it is for. Elements can be moved within the sections they are in on the desktop version.
Susans suggestion in the original post is also definitely a good idea for any future building, edit the mobile as you go.

Initially I felt some frustration with the mobile view, but as I played with it I continued to find ways to resolve any and all issues I was having. Yes, it is essential to go into the phone view every time you make a change on the desktop view. I ran across that piece of info before starting and it helped me immensely. Thank you.
