All icons and buttons are viewed as empty squares. Not only is this happening in sitebuilder, but also when site is viewed on the internet.

What page?

All pages in the website builder. There are no images to any of the elements. Everything shows up as blank squares. On the published version I noticed the social elements at the bottom of each page were showing up as empty squares as well. Only by running the pointer over them allows you to tell what they are.

This may have been a short-lived problem, but I see the images and the social media elements loading correctly. Are you still experiencing the same problem?

Yes, in the website builder all the elements including the social media ones are just showing up as squares. The published version appears to be fine.

Can you try Chrome or Firefox? It seems ok for me.

I do use chrome and everything was fine until recently. I don't understand what is causing this.

It seems like it must be something about your browser or your network is blocking it. Can you try Firefox to see if it is the browser?

It turns out that the issue was caused by a security setting in my router. The setting has been changed and the issue is now gone.
