How do I use wild cards in my postal/zip code shipping & tax zones?

BigCommerce supports setting up one or more shipping zones by certain postal or zip codes. If you are setting up a shipping zone for just a few postal or zip codes, this is a rather simple task.  If, however, you are setting up a zone for a range of codes, the use of wild cards can greatly reduce the amount of work needed. The instructions below explain the setup of shipping zones based on postal or zip codes.  Specific instructions for the use of wild cards can be found further down.

1.) Login to your store's control panel.
2.) Click the blue Settings link at the top of the page to make a drop down menu appear.
3.) Choose either Shipping Settings or Tax Settings.
4.) Click the Shipping Zones tab, or the Tax Rates & Zones tab.
5.) If you haven't already created a zone, you can create one here. If you have, simply click the Edit Settings link that corresponds with the zone you want to edit.
6.) There will be three choices about how you would like to setup your zone. Clicking the radio button next to This shipping zone is based on one or more postal or ZIP codes will give you a drop down box to choose your country and a text box to enter the postal or zip codes.
7.) Enter the appropriate postal or zip codes for this zone into the text box.
8.) Enter any other required information for the zone and click the Save button
You can use wild cards to specify a range of codes. The two supported wild cards are "*", and "?".

* stands for one or more characters.

  • 665* matches any valid code that begins with 665.  For example: 66501, 66502, ... 66599

? stands for any character .

  • 665?6 means only a signle number can be used in place of the question mark.  For example: 66506 - 66596.

These wildcards will work for letters as well for areas with alphanumeric postal codes.
