How do I setup PayPal?

Choosing a Payment Method

PayPal Website Payments Standard: Uses your primary PayPal email address to make the connection between Bigcommerce and PayPal. If you offer this method of PayPal, then once customers are sent from your checkout to PayPal's payment page then they will have the option to make a payment from their PayPal account OR with a credit card without logging into a PayPal account. Express Checkout also has the ability to take a credit card in this manner. If you already have a free PayPal account, this setup is super simple and should take only a couple of minutes.

PayPal Express Checkout: Uses a "signature" to connect Bigcommerce and PayPal. If you offer this method of PayPal, then once customers are sent from your checkout to PayPal's payment page then customers will sign in with a PayPal account or checkout as a guest. Setup is a little more involved. This is a very good option for those that already have another non-PayPal gateway and want to offer their customers the option to checkout with a PayPal account.

PayPal Website Payments Standard

First let's look at the standard version. This is the simplest one to configure:

1.) Sign up for a free PayPal account.

2.) From your store's Control Panel click on Settings and then Checkout.


3.) In the "How Would You Like to Take Payment?" box, click the box next to PayPal Website Payments (Standard) and Save Changes to the page by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the screen.


Enter your email address into the PayPal Website Payments (Standard) tab shown below.

Note: It must be the exact same email address that you used when setting up your PayPal account.



This will allow customers to go through the entire checkout process and then choose to either pay with their PayPal or enter a credit card as a PayPal guest.

PayPal Express Checkout

Setting up PayPal Express Checkout requires a few more steps because it uses an API (Application Programming Interface) signature to authenticate instead of the email address.

1.) Sign up for a PayPal account.

2.) Login to your PayPal account.


3.) Click on Profile link in the top navigation menu.


5.) Choose the API Signature option (This may also be a link called: Request API Credentials)


6.) Here you will see the following information that you need to enter into your Bigcommerce control panel under the PayPal Checkout Settings:

- PayPal API Username

- PayPal API Password

- PayPal API Signature


7.) Click Settings and then Checkout.


8.) Place check next to PayPal Express Checkout by clicking on the box. Click the Save button at the bottom of the screen.


9.) Enter the signature credentials provided by PayPal and click Save.

That should be all that you need to do to setup PayPal Express Checkout! It will appear as a graphic on your cart page to allow people to go directly to PayPal and purchase from your online store.
