uploading a file

I have a Word document and can't upload it to one of my pages. What are the specific steps? I select FILE, the file appears on a screen with other files I have uploaded. I SELECT the file and a small window appears on the page that reads DOWNLOAD. The file I selected doesn't appear on the page.
